Chapter 7 - ADRIAN'S APOLOGY

Adrian did not go to Rachel's house that morning.

He wanted to.

Every instinct told him to drive there, knock on the door, and beg Clara to forgive him.

Instead, he stayed away.

For once, he understood that what he wanted was not the most important thing.

At noon, Clara received a text.

I am sorry.

There was another message beneath it.

I will not come over unless you ask me to.

Clara stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

Vanessa gave a statement to police.

She admitted pushing the stroller but claims she expected you to catch it.

Police also have the damaged brake.

Clara closed her eyes.

Rachel sat across from her.

"Are you okay?"

"No."

Clara placed the phone down.

"But Emma is."

She looked toward the baby sleeping in a portable crib.

"That's what matters."

Rachel studied her.

"What are you going to do about Adrian?"

Clara did not answer immediately.

"I don't know."

"Do you still love him?"

"Yes."

The answer hurt.

Rachel reached across the table.

"Love doesn't mean you have to go back."

"I know."

That afternoon, Olivia came downstairs carrying her laptop.

"I found something."

Clara looked up.

Olivia opened a folder.

"I backed up my phone last month."

She had searched older photographs and videos for anything involving Vanessa.

One recording immediately stood out.

It had been captured accidentally.

Olivia had been filming Emma playing on a blanket when Vanessa entered the room.

Vanessa's voice could be heard speaking on the phone in the hallway.

"I need another month."

A man's voice responded faintly through the speaker.

Vanessa continued.

"Clara is getting suspicious."

There was a pause.

"No."

"Adrian won't believe her once I'm done."

Clara leaned forward.

"Play that again."

Olivia did.

Adrian won't believe her once I'm done.

Rachel's expression changed.

"This was planned before the stroller incident."

Clara nodded.

"Send it to Detective Bell."

Olivia hesitated.

"There's another part."

The recording continued.

Vanessa laughed quietly.

"You worry too much, Mason."

Clara froze.

"Mason?"

Olivia looked at her.

"You know him?"

Clara did.

Mason Cole was Vanessa's former boyfriend.

He had worked in Adrian's company for six months before being fired for manipulating vendor contracts.

Adrian had believed Mason acted alone.

Clara suddenly understood.

"What if he didn't?"

Rachel leaned closer.

"What are you thinking?"

"Mason knew how the company payment system worked."

"And Vanessa had authorization access."

Olivia completed the thought.

"They did it together."

Clara immediately called Adrian.

He answered quietly.

"Hi."

"We found another recording."

She explained.

Adrian did not interrupt.

When she finished, he whispered one word.

"Mason."

"Yes."

Adrian remembered the investigation after Mason's termination.

Several suspicious vendor payments had disappeared immediately afterward.

He had assumed firing Mason solved the problem.

What if the scheme had simply continued under Vanessa's company?

"I'll send his information to the detective."

"Good."

A silence followed.

Adrian finally spoke.

"Clara."

She almost ended the call.

Instead, she waited.

"I know saying sorry doesn't fix anything."

"No."

"I also know I don't deserve forgiveness because I finally discovered the truth."

Clara's throat tightened.

Adrian continued.

"You saved our daughter."

"And I punished you for it."

His voice cracked.

"I don't know how to live with that."

Clara looked at Olivia.

She was pretending not to listen.

"You live with it by never doing it again."

"I won't."

"You don't know that yet."

Adrian went silent.

Clara continued.

"You prove it."

Then she ended the call.

For the first time since the incident, Adrian understood what an apology actually required.

Not words.

Not flowers.

May you like

Not promises.

Change.
