Chapter 20 - THE LAST RECORDING

Six months later, Emma took her first steps.

She crossed three unsteady feet of living room carpet before falling into Clara's arms.

Olivia captured the entire moment on video.

Adrian laughed.

Clara cried.

Then Olivia replayed it three times.

The house had changed.

The old stroller was gone.

The broken railing had been repaired.

The television that once revealed Vanessa's lie now displayed family photographs.

Adrian and Clara were still in counseling.

Some days were easy.

Others were not.

Trust returned slowly.

But it returned honestly.

Margaret visited only when invited.

She respected Clara's decisions.

Thomas spent weekends teaching Olivia to drive.

Vanessa remained incarcerated.

She had written Adrian several letters.

He kept them unopened in a locked drawer.

Evelyn was awaiting trial on fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction-related charges.

She continued insisting she had merely tried to protect the Hale family.

Few people still believed her.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, a delivery driver left a small package at the front door.

There was no sender.

Adrian carried it inside.

Clara immediately became cautious.

"Don't open it."

He called Detective Bell.

The detective arrived and inspected the package.

There were no dangerous materials.

Inside was an old digital recorder.

A note was wrapped around it.

Natalie wanted someone to hear this.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Olivia stared at the device.

"My mom?"

Detective Bell photographed everything.

Then he inserted fresh batteries.

The recorder contained one file.

The date was thirteen years earlier.

Three weeks before Natalie's fatal car accident.

Adrian sat down.

Clara took his hand.

Olivia sat beside him.

Detective Bell pressed play.

Natalie's voice filled the room.

"If Adrian ever hears this, I need him to know I wasn't trying to take Olivia away from him."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I was trying to get her away from Evelyn."

Olivia's face changed.

Natalie continued.

"Evelyn has been moving money through accounts connected to the family trust."

"Thomas doesn't know."

"Adrian doesn't know."

"I found records."

"I made copies."

A long pause followed.

Then Natalie whispered.

"And I'm afraid Evelyn knows I found them."

Adrian's eyes opened.

Detective Bell leaned closer to the recorder.

Natalie continued.

"Yesterday, someone followed me home."

"This morning, the brake warning light in my car came on."

Clara's stomach dropped.

Adrian stood so quickly the chair scraped across the floor.

"No."

Natalie's voice trembled through the speaker.

"I took the car to a mechanic."

"He said a brake line looked damaged."

Olivia covered her mouth.

Detective Bell stopped the recording.

"Your mother's accident was caused by a drunk driver."

Adrian nodded rapidly.

"I know."

"The investigation proved it."

"I know."

Clara looked at the recorder.

"But someone may have been threatening her before the accident."

Detective Bell nodded.

"That's a different question."

Adrian stared toward the window.

For thirteen years, he had believed Natalie's final months were nothing more than a collapsing marriage followed by a random tragedy.

Now that story had changed.

The recorder continued.

Natalie named a storage facility.

She gave a unit number.

Then she provided a code.

At the end, her voice became softer.

"If anything happens to me, don't let Evelyn tell Olivia who I was."

"Tell my daughter I loved her."

"Tell Adrian I wish he had believed me sooner."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Olivia was crying silently.

Adrian looked shattered.

Clara reached for her.

The three of them stayed together while rain began tapping against the windows.

Detective Bell copied the storage information.

The facility still existed.

The unit number was active.

More surprisingly, the bill had been paid automatically for thirteen years.

Not by Natalie.

Not by Adrian.

By an account whose owner had been hidden behind an attorney trust.

Detective Bell stood.

"I'll get a warrant."

Adrian looked at him.

"You think something is still there?"

"We'll find out."

The following morning, investigators opened the storage unit.

Inside were twelve sealed boxes.

Financial documents.

Photographs.

Copies of checks.

Family trust records.

And a locked metal case.

Detective Bell opened the case in the presence of Adrian, Clara, Olivia, and two investigators.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

The first showed Evelyn meeting with Mason's father more than a decade earlier.

The second showed Vanessa standing beside them.

Vanessa could not have been older than nineteen.

The third photograph showed Natalie leaving a bank.

Someone had written a date across the bottom.

Three days before she died.

Adrian turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Only one sentence.

Evelyn is not working alone.

Clara stared at the words.

Olivia whispered.

"Then who was helping her?"

Detective Bell reached deeper into the case.

He removed one final envelope.

A name was written across the front.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

His face went white.

Clara looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Adrian could barely speak.

"My father."

At that exact moment, Thomas Hale was sitting alone in his study.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Thomas answered.

For several seconds, he listened.

Then all the color disappeared from his face.

A distorted voice spoke from the other end.

"They found Natalie's boxes."

Thomas slowly closed his eyes.

The caller continued.

"You know what happens now."

Thomas looked toward an old photograph of Adrian, Natalie, and four-year-old Olivia.

His hand began trembling.

Then he whispered the words that would open a chapter none of them knew existed.

"I told Evelyn thirteen years ago that we should have destroyed everything."

The line went dead.
