Chapter 18 - THE FILE CALLED OLIVIA
The laptop was encrypted.
Investigators needed two days to open it.
When they did, they found a folder containing thousands of documents.
Financial records.
Private emails.
Recorded phone calls.
Copies of family trust documents.
And one folder labeled OLIVIA.
Adrian's hands shook when Detective Bell told him.
Inside were documents dating back twelve years.
The oldest had been created while Natalie was still alive.
Evelyn had collected information about Olivia from the time she was a toddler.
School records.
Medical information.
Photographs.
Notes about Adrian and Natalie's marriage.
After Natalie died, the documents continued.
There were drafts of letters suggesting Olivia should spend more time under Evelyn's care.
There were private notes arguing that Adrian was too emotionally unstable after Natalie's death to raise a child without family supervision.
Adrian stared at the papers.
"She wanted custody?"
"Influence."
Detective Bell corrected.
"Maybe guardianship."
"Maybe control over the trust attached to Olivia."
That was the missing piece.
Natalie's father had established a substantial trust for Olivia.
Adrian had never touched it.
When Olivia turned twenty-one, she would control the entire amount.
Evelyn had known.
For years, she had tried to place herself in a position of influence over Olivia.
Clara disrupted that plan.
Olivia loved Clara.
Trusted her.
Called her Mom when she was frightened or sick.
Evelyn saw Clara as another woman standing between her and the future of the Hale family.
Vanessa's hatred had been useful.
The stolen money created leverage.
Evelyn had promised to protect Vanessa from prosecution if Vanessa helped remove Clara.
Vanessa had believed her.
Mason had helped manufacture financial confusion.
The fake accusations had begun.
Then came the stroller.
Detective Bell played one final recording from the laptop.
Evelyn's voice filled the room.
"You need one incident Adrian cannot ignore."
Vanessa responded.
"What if Clara doesn't react the way we need?"
"Then create the reaction."
"What about Emma?"
There was a pause.
Evelyn answered.
"Do not hurt the child."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Obviously."
Evelyn continued.
"But fear is persuasive."
The recording ended.
Clara felt sick.
Adrian covered his face.
Olivia sat beside them.
For several seconds, she did not speak.
Then she asked.
"Was Grandma Natalie right?"
Adrian looked at her.
"What?"
"Did Evelyn destroy your marriage with my mom?"
Adrian's eyes filled.
"No."
He took Olivia's hand.
"Evelyn interfered."
"I let her."
"Your mother and I made mistakes."
"You never carry that."
Olivia began crying.
Clara wrapped an arm around her.
Adrian continued.
"I can't change what happened with Natalie."
"But I can stop repeating it."
He looked at Clara.
"And I will."
The evidence led to additional charges against Vanessa and a widening fraud investigation involving Evelyn.
But to Olivia, none of that mattered as much as one realization.
Clara had not entered her family and stolen a place.
Clara had filled a place that had been deliberately kept empty by people who benefited from keeping Adrian isolated.
Olivia hugged her tightly.
"I don't want you to leave."
Clara closed her eyes.
"I know."
"Are you going to?"
Clara looked toward Adrian.
He did not ask her to stay.
That mattered too.
"I haven't decided."
Olivia nodded through tears.
"Okay."

"But whatever happens between your dad and me, I'm not leaving you."
