Chapter 11 - AUNT EVELYN

Evelyn Hale lived in a gated estate forty minutes north of the city.
She was sixty-eight years old.
Widowed.
Wealthy.
Controlled.
And furious when police arrived at her door.
"I have done nothing illegal."
Detective Bell showed her the messages.
Evelyn barely looked at them.
"My niece complains constantly."
"Did you tell her to get rid of Clara?"
"I told Vanessa to stop allowing Clara to manipulate Adrian."
"Did you send this message?"
He placed a printed copy on the table.
If you want Clara gone, do it today.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"That could mean anything."
"What did you mean?"
"I meant Vanessa should tell her brother the truth."
"What truth?"
"That Clara was investigating the family."
Detective Bell leaned back.
"Clara was investigating stolen money."
Evelyn's expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But he noticed.
"You knew about the money."
"No."
"You didn't look surprised."
Evelyn folded her hands.
"I am rarely surprised."
Meanwhile, Adrian confronted his parents.
Thomas admitted Evelyn had always believed Adrian's marriage weakened family control.
Margaret admitted something worse.
Three months earlier, Evelyn had offered Vanessa money.
"How much?"
Adrian asked.
"Fifty thousand dollars."
Clara stared at her.
"For what?"
Margaret looked ashamed.
"She said Vanessa needed help with her business."
Thomas frowned.
"You never told me this."
Margaret shook her head.
"Evelyn asked me not to."
Adrian stood abruptly.
"Mom."
"I didn't know."
"You keep saying that."
Margaret began crying.
Adrian's voice rose before he caught himself.
He stopped.
Clara noticed.
He took a breath.
Then another.
When he spoke again, his voice was controlled.
"You didn't know because you didn't want to know."
Margaret stared at him.
"You have spent years looking away every time Vanessa or Evelyn crossed a line."
"I did the same thing."
He looked at Clara.
"And this is where it got us."
Later that evening, the family gathered at Thomas's house.
Not for reconciliation.
For truth.
Evelyn arrived without invitation.
She walked into the living room wearing a cream coat and an expression of contempt.
"I hear everyone has decided I'm responsible for Vanessa's stupidity."
Clara stood.
"Did you tell her to frame me?"
Evelyn looked directly at her.
"I told her that Adrian needed to see you clearly."
"Did you know she was stealing?"
Evelyn smiled.
"Vanessa has always been financially irresponsible."
"That's not an answer."
"No."
Evelyn removed her gloves.
"It's an observation."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Did you help her?"
Evelyn looked at her nephew.
"Everything I have ever done has been to protect this family."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Emma is this family."
For the first time, Evelyn had no quick reply.
Olivia entered the room carrying her laptop.
"I think I found something."
Everyone looked toward her.
She placed the laptop on the coffee table.
"I searched Vanessa's shared photo albums."
A photograph filled the screen.
It had been taken at Evelyn's house two months earlier.
Vanessa sat beside Evelyn.
A document lay on the table between them.
Clara enlarged the image.
At the top of the paper were four words.
PETITION FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.

The name beneath them was clear.
EMMA HALE.
