Chapter 12 - THE PLAN FOR EMMA

Nobody moved.
Clara stared at the document on the screen.
Her daughter's name seemed to glow against the white page.
"What is that?"
Evelyn answered before anyone else could.
"A draft."
Adrian turned toward her.
"A draft of what?"
"Nothing that was ever filed."
Clara moved closer.
"Why was my daughter's name on a guardianship petition?"
Evelyn's eyes remained cold.
"Because Vanessa believed you were unstable."
Olivia laughed in disbelief.
"Vanessa created the evidence."
Evelyn looked at her.
"Stay out of adult matters."
Olivia's face hardened.
"No."
Adrian stepped between them.
"Never speak to my daughter like that again."
Evelyn lifted one eyebrow.
"You have become very dramatic."
Adrian pointed toward the photograph.
"Explain it."
Evelyn finally did.
She claimed Vanessa had approached her several months earlier.
Vanessa said Clara was emotionally unstable after Emma's birth.
She claimed Clara was controlling.
Paranoid.
Obsessed with finances.
She said Adrian was too blinded by love to notice.
Evelyn had introduced Vanessa to an attorney.
The attorney prepared a sample guardianship petition.
Nothing had been filed.
But the strategy was obvious.
If Vanessa could produce evidence that Clara endangered Emma, Evelyn would encourage Adrian to separate from her.
If Adrian refused, Vanessa could potentially use the manufactured evidence to seek emergency intervention.
Clara felt physically ill.
"You were trying to take my baby."
Evelyn shrugged.
"If you were dangerous, someone had to protect her."
"I wasn't dangerous."
"I only knew what Vanessa told me."
Clara stepped closer.
"You wanted to believe her."
Evelyn did not answer.
Adrian did.
"Because Clara didn't belong in your version of our family."
Evelyn looked at him.
"She changed you."
"Yes."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"She made me better."
Then his eyes lowered.
"Until the night I proved I still had a long way to go."
Clara looked away.
Evelyn noticed the bruise on Clara's face.
Understanding appeared.
"Adrian."
He met her eyes.
"You hit her?"
Clara expected Evelyn to use it against her.
Instead, Evelyn looked almost satisfied.
"Then perhaps Vanessa wasn't entirely wrong about the instability in that house."
Adrian moved so quickly Thomas stepped forward.
But Adrian stopped himself.
His fists unclenched.
He took one slow breath.
"No."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
Adrian continued.
"What I did was my responsibility."
"Not Clara's."
"Not Vanessa's."
"Mine."
His voice remained steady.
"And I will answer for it."
Clara watched him.
For the first time, he did not blame emotion.
Confusion.
Family pressure.
Or anyone else.
Evelyn's smile faded.
Adrian pointed toward the door.
"You are done."
"This is my brother's house."
Thomas spoke.
"Not tonight."
Evelyn stared at him.
Thomas opened the door.
"Leave."
Evelyn picked up her gloves.
Before stepping outside, she looked back at Clara.
"This family will regret choosing you."
Clara met her gaze.
"They're not choosing me."
She looked around the room.
"They're finally choosing the truth."
The following morning, police seized Evelyn's phone and computer.
On the computer, investigators found the guardianship documents.
They also found financial transfers to Vanessa.
But the most disturbing discovery was hidden inside an email draft that had never been sent.
