Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The living room went completely silent.

Even Emma seemed to stop crying for a second as the security footage filled the seventy-five-inch television mounted above the fireplace.

Adrian stood frozen with his daughter in his arms.

On the screen, Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.

Clara was nowhere near her.

The stroller was parked several feet away with Emma strapped inside.

Vanessa glanced toward the kitchen.

Then she looked directly toward the hallway.

She placed one hand on the stroller handle.

Olivia increased the volume.

No one spoke.

Vanessa released the brake.

Then she pushed.

The stroller rolled forward.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

It headed directly toward the staircase.

Vanessa stepped backward.

She did not scream.

She did not run after it.

Clara appeared from the kitchen carrying a bottle.

The bottle fell from her hand.

She sprinted toward Emma.

The stroller struck the edge of the first stair.

Clara threw herself forward and grabbed the frame.

Her shoulder slammed into the railing.

The stroller tipped sideways.

Clara caught Emma before the baby could fall.

Only then did Vanessa begin screaming.

The footage continued.

Vanessa rushed toward Clara.

She pointed at her.

Then she looked toward the front entrance.

Seconds later, Adrian came through the door.

Everyone in the room watched Adrian take Emma from Clara.

They watched him shout.

They watched Clara try to explain.

Then came the moment Adrian wished he could erase from his life forever.

His hand struck Clara's face.

The sound from the television speakers seemed louder than it had been in the room.

Clara closed her eyes.

Adrian looked at her.

A red mark was still visible across her cheek.

His face lost all color.

"Oh God."

Clara said nothing.

Adrian slowly lowered his eyes to Emma.

His baby girl was alive because of the woman he had just slapped.

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the television.

"Turn that off."

Olivia stepped between her and the remote.

"No."

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Olivia, you don't understand."

"I understand exactly what I saw."

"That video doesn't show everything."

Clara finally looked at her.

"What doesn't it show?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian turned toward his sister.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Why?"

Vanessa started crying again.

This time nobody moved to comfort her.

"It was an accident."

Olivia shook her head.

"You released the brake."

"I was moving it."

"You pushed it toward the stairs."

"I thought the wheel was locked."

"You checked the hallway before you did it."

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Stop interrogating me."

Adrian stared at her.

"You told me Clara pushed Emma."

"I panicked."

"You looked me in the face and said my wife tried to hurt our daughter."

Vanessa backed away.

"I was scared."

Clara let out a broken laugh.

"You were scared?"

Everyone turned toward her.

Clara's hands were trembling.

Blood had dried along one scrape on her forearm from where she had hit the staircase railing.

"You nearly sent Emma down a flight of stairs."

Her voice cracked.

"Then you stood there while Adrian hit me for saving her."

Adrian stepped toward Clara.

She immediately stepped backward.

That movement hurt him more than anything she could have said.

"Clara."

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

Olivia looked between them.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Dad, you didn't even ask."

Adrian closed his eyes.

She was right.

He had walked into chaos.

He had seen his sister crying.

He had heard one accusation.

And he had chosen rage over the woman who had shared his bed, raised his oldest daughter, and given birth to Emma seven months earlier.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse from the sofa.

"I'm leaving."

Adrian turned.

"No."

She stopped.

He pointed toward the chair.

"Sit down."

"You're not my father."

"No."

His voice hardened.

"I'm the father of the baby you nearly killed."

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time that night, real fear appeared in her face.

Adrian looked at Olivia.

"Save that video."

"I already did."

Vanessa's head snapped toward her.

Olivia raised her phone.

"And I sent it to myself, Clara, and Grandma."

Vanessa went pale.

Adrian looked back at his sister.

"You are going to tell me exactly what happened."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"And if I don't?"

Adrian looked at the woman he had once defended without question.

Then he looked at Clara.

May you like

The answer came easily.

"Then you can explain it to the police."
