Chapter 13 - AFTER THE ACCIDENT
The email draft was written by Evelyn.
It contained no direct confession.
But its language was chilling.
Once there is a documented incident involving the child, Adrian will be forced to see the situation differently.
Do not overcomplicate this.
You need one believable event.
Clara read the lines twice.
Her hands shook.
Adrian stood beside her.
"She knew."
Clara whispered.
"Maybe not about the stroller."
"But she knew Vanessa was planning something."
Detective Bell agreed.
"The language suggests she was encouraging Vanessa to manufacture an incident."
"Whether prosecutors can prove she knew Emma would be physically endangered is another question."
Clara looked at him.
"So she could walk away?"
"I didn't say that."
The detective closed the file.
"We also found evidence she funded the fraudulent companies."
Adrian frowned.
"She invested in them?"
"More accurately, she covered losses."
The financial scheme became clearer.
Vanessa and Mason had stolen company funds.
Evelyn discovered it months earlier.
Instead of exposing them, she paid Vanessa to hide part of the loss.
Why?
Because Vanessa had information Evelyn wanted.
Internal company documents.
Voting agreements.
Details about Adrian's plans to restructure the family business.
Evelyn feared losing influence.
Vanessa became useful.
Then Clara began noticing the payments.
Evelyn needed Clara discredited before the theft exposed everything.
The stroller incident had been Vanessa's desperate solution.
A scheme intended to create one believable event had almost killed Emma.
Clara listened without speaking.
When Detective Bell finished, she looked toward Adrian.
"Your family almost destroyed itself over control of money."
Adrian nodded.
"And I helped them."
Clara frowned.
"How?"
"I spent years ignoring everything because I didn't want conflict."
"I let Vanessa take money."
"I let Evelyn interfere."
"I let Mom disrespect you."
"I thought keeping peace was the same as protecting my family."
He looked toward Emma.
"It wasn't."
Clara felt anger and sadness at the same time.
"You protected peace until there was nothing peaceful left."
Adrian nodded.
"You're right."
That afternoon, he made a decision.
He removed Vanessa from every company position.
He froze all discretionary family accounts under his authority.
He called an emergency board meeting and disclosed the fraud.
He did not hide his sister's involvement.
He did not hide Evelyn's.
Several board members were furious.
One asked Adrian whether he feared damaging the Hale family reputation.
Adrian answered simply.
"The reputation deserves damage if protecting it requires lying."
That sentence appeared in the meeting minutes.
By evening, Evelyn knew.
She called Adrian seventeen times.
He answered once.
"You humiliated this family."
"No."
"You did."
"You are destroying your grandfather's legacy."
Adrian looked toward a framed photograph of Clara and Emma.
"My grandfather built buildings."
"He didn't build a religion."
Evelyn's voice became icy.
"You think Clara will stay with you because you're defending her now?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"No."
The answer surprised Evelyn.
"I don't know if Clara will ever come back."
"Then why are you doing this?"
Adrian looked at the bruise he could still picture on his wife's face.
