Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE IN THE RAIN

The storm arrived on a Thursday night.

Heavy rain hammered the windows.

Wind bent the trees along Adrian's driveway.

Clara had agreed to spend the evening at the house with Adrian and Olivia.

It was the first family dinner there since the incident.

Nothing dramatic happened.

That was what made it meaningful.

Emma threw mashed carrots onto Adrian's shirt.

Olivia laughed.

Clara laughed too.

For several minutes, they almost felt normal.

At nine fifteen, the security alarm sounded.

Adrian stood.

"Stay here."

He checked the camera app.

The feed from the garage was black.

Then the back-door sensor triggered.

Olivia's face changed.

"Dad."

Adrian called police.

He did not go searching through the house.

Instead, he locked Clara, Olivia, and Emma inside the upstairs primary bedroom.

They waited.

A crash sounded downstairs.

Then footsteps.

Clara held Emma tightly.

Olivia whispered.

"Who is it?"

Adrian remained near the locked door.

"I don't know."

A voice came from the hallway.

"Adrian."

Clara froze.

Vanessa.

Adrian's face hardened.

"Police are coming."

Vanessa laughed.

"I need five minutes."

"You aren't getting five seconds."

"I know what Evelyn did to Natalie."

Adrian went still.

Clara looked at him.

Vanessa continued through the door.

"I have proof."

Adrian did not unlock it.

"Leave it outside."

"I need something first."

"What?"

"My laptop."

Adrian frowned.

"What laptop?"

"The one Clara took."

Clara whispered.

"I never took her laptop."

Vanessa heard.

"Stop lying."

Her voice became frantic.

"It was in the office after the police searched my apartment."

Clara remembered.

Investigators had returned several boxes of company property to Adrian's home.

One box remained unopened in the study.

Vanessa believed her laptop was inside.

Adrian spoke through the door.

"You violated a court order by coming here."

"I don't care."

"You should."

Vanessa slammed her hand against the door.

"That computer has everything."

Clara's pulse quickened.

"Everything about what?"

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Evelyn."

"Mason."

"The money."

"Natalie."

"All of it."

Police sirens sounded faintly in the distance.

Vanessa heard them.

Her footsteps moved away.

Adrian waited.

Then came another sound.

Glass breaking downstairs.

"She's going for the study."

Clara whispered.

Adrian remained where he was.

"Let the police handle it."

That decision mattered.

The old Adrian would have rushed downstairs.

The old Adrian would have let anger choose for him.

He did not.

Minutes later, officers entered the house.

They found Vanessa inside the study.

She was holding a laptop.

She surrendered after a brief confrontation.

No one was injured.

As officers escorted her outside, Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

"You still don't understand."

He said nothing.

Vanessa turned toward Clara.

"Evelyn never wanted Emma."

Clara's blood turned cold.

"What?"

Vanessa smiled through tears.

"She wanted Olivia."

Adrian stepped forward.

Detective Bell stopped him.

Vanessa continued.

"Ask her why."

Then police placed her inside the cruiser.

The taillights disappeared into the rain.

Olivia stood at the top of the staircase.

Her face had gone completely white.
