Chapter 16 - VANESSA'S OFFER
Vanessa had been released pending trial under strict conditions.
She was forbidden from contacting Clara.
Forbidden from contacting Olivia.
Forbidden from approaching Adrian's home.
She obeyed for twenty-three days.
Then Clara received an envelope.
There was no return address.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Clara almost threw it away.
Instead, she called Detective Bell.
The letter violated Vanessa's no-contact condition.
Investigators collected it as evidence.
Before handing it over, Clara read the first paragraph.
I know you hate me.
You should.
But there are things you don't know.
Clara continued.
Evelyn was planning this before I ever stole the money.
She wanted Adrian away from you.
She used me because she knew I was angry.
I did terrible things.
But I was not the only one.
At the bottom was a sentence that made Clara's stomach tighten.
Ask Adrian what happened to his first wife.
Clara stared at the page.
Adrian's first wife, Natalie, had died when Olivia was four.
A car accident.
Adrian rarely spoke about it.
Clara had always assumed the grief was too painful.
That evening, she showed him the letter.
Adrian read the last sentence twice.
"What is she talking about?"
Clara watched him carefully.
"You tell me."
"Natalie died in a car accident."
"I know."
"Was Evelyn involved with Natalie too?"
Adrian's face changed.
Clara immediately noticed.
"What?"
He stood and walked toward the window.
"My family didn't like Natalie either."
Clara's pulse quickened.
"Why not?"
"The same reasons."
"She wasn't from their world."
"She challenged Evelyn."
"She wanted me to leave the family company."
Clara stared at him.
"And?"
Adrian looked ashamed.
"Before Natalie died, we were separated."
Clara had never known.
"For how long?"
"Five months."
"Why?"
Adrian sat down.
"Because I kept choosing my family over her."
The words felt painfully familiar.
Clara went still.
Adrian continued.
"Evelyn convinced me Natalie was trying to isolate me."
"Mom said Natalie was unstable."
"Vanessa was only nineteen, but she repeated everything they said."
Clara's voice dropped.
"Did you believe them?"
"Yes."
The room became very quiet.
Adrian looked at her.
"I never hit Natalie."
Clara did not react.
"But I failed her in other ways."
"She filed for divorce."
"Then she died before it was finalized."
Clara felt something cold settle in her chest.
"Was her accident suspicious?"
"No."
"The other driver was drunk."
"He went to prison."
"Then why would Vanessa mention her?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't know."
Detective Bell found the answer two days later.
Investigators searched old emails between Evelyn and Natalie.
The pattern was almost identical.
Evelyn questioned Natalie's mental health.
Suggested Adrian document her behavior.
Encouraged relatives to view her as unstable.
Tried to influence custody discussions involving Olivia.
Natalie had written one final email to Evelyn three weeks before her death.
You will not do to my daughter what you have done to Adrian.
Clara read the sentence with tears in her eyes.
Evelyn had not caused Natalie's death.
But she had spent decades using the same weapon.
Divide.
Discredit.
