Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE WITH NO WINDOWS

Nora found the property first.

She searched older court filings connected to Mercer’s family.

One company repeatedly appeared in tax records.

North Creek Storage LLC.

It owned an abandoned medical rehabilitation center forty miles outside the city.

The building had been closed for fifteen years.

Its windows were covered with steel panels.

Its utilities were still active.

Federal agents obtained a warrant.

They entered shortly after midnight.

Inside, they found something far worse than storage.

Rooms had been converted into private holding cells.

Medical equipment lined one corridor.

Old patient beds had been fitted with restraints.

A records room contained folders organized by names.

Margaret Bell.

Thomas Vale.

Janice Morrell.

Peter Conway.

Ruth Devlin.

Martin Shaw.

Claire Parker.

There were dozens more.

Some had been declared dead.

Some were officially missing.

Some had transferred their businesses shortly before vanishing.

The files contained photographs, passwords, property information, family contacts, medical histories, and even funeral preferences.

Each victim had been studied before being removed.

Ramirez opened Claire’s folder.

Inside was a complete schedule of her normal week.

Grocery store.

Gym.

Ethan’s school.

Dentist.

Bank.

There was also a detailed funeral plan.

White coffin.

Closed casket.

Burial within twenty-four hours.

No autopsy.

No embalming.

Ethan’s name appeared beside one handwritten note.

BOY MAY CAUSE DELAY.

Claire stared at the words.

Richard had considered her son a problem before the plan even began.

Another note appeared beneath it.

KEEP HIM AWAY FROM CASKET.

That explained why Richard had repeatedly told funeral staff Ethan was emotionally unstable.

He wanted adults to stop Ethan from approaching the coffin.

The plan had nearly worked.

Agents searched the basement.

There they found refrigerated storage units.

Inside were labeled blood samples, medications, identification cards, and sealed envelopes containing hair.

Materials for creating false forensic evidence.

The operation was larger than anyone expected.

Then an agent found a laptop still warm.

Someone had been inside the building recently.

Security footage showed a black sedan leaving only seventeen minutes before police arrived.

The license plate belonged to Judge Mercer.

Ramirez ordered roadblocks.

The vehicle was discovered abandoned beside a wooded access road.

No Mercer.

No Victor Hale.

But the back seat contained a suitcase.

Inside were cash, passports, and one framed photograph.

Claire recognized the picture.

It had been taken at her wedding to Richard.

In the corner stood Victor Hale.

Beside him stood Judge Mercer.

And between them stood Claire’s late husband.

Daniel Parker.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

“My dad knew them?”

Claire could not speak.

Daniel had been a financial investigator for the state.

His death six years earlier had been ruled an accident.

His car had gone off a mountain road during heavy rain.

At least that was what Claire had been told.

Nora turned the photograph over.

Something was written on the back.

D.P. FOUND THE LEDGER.

Ethan read the sentence twice.

Then looked at his mother.

Claire’s face had gone completely pale.

Richard had not entered her life by accident.

He had married the widow of the man who discovered their crimes.

And suddenly Claire understood the most horrifying possibility of all.

Daniel Parker’s death might not have been an accident.
