Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COFFIN

For three full seconds, nobody inside St. Matthew’s Memorial Hall moved.

Claire Parker’s terrified eyes stared through the jagged opening in the coffin lid.

Silver duct tape covered her mouth.

Her wrists were bound across her stomach.

Her face was pale, damp with sweat, and unmistakably alive.

Ethan dropped the hammer.

“Mom.”

His voice broke on the word.

He reached toward the opening.

Richard raised the handgun higher.

“I said everybody step back.”

Several guests screamed and ducked behind chairs.

A flower arrangement crashed to the floor.

The funeral director stumbled backward into the wall.

Richard’s hand was shaking, but his expression was terrifyingly controlled.

He had expected grief.

He had expected prayers.

He had expected a sealed coffin lowered into the earth.

He had not expected a twelve-year-old boy to destroy the entire plan with a hammer.

Ethan looked from the gun to his mother.

Claire shook her head frantically.

Her eyes seemed to say the same thing again and again.

Run.

But Ethan did not run.

“You said she was dead.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“She was supposed to be.”

A woman near the back quietly reached into her purse for her phone.

Richard noticed.

“Put it down.”

Nobody moved.

Then Father Michael, the priest preparing to conduct the service, stepped forward.

“Richard, whatever happened here can still end without anyone else getting hurt.”

Richard laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You have no idea what happened here.”

“I know there is a living woman inside that coffin.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“And she should have stayed quiet.”

Ethan suddenly understood.

His mother had not accidentally been declared dead.

She had not awakened unexpectedly.

Richard knew she was alive.

He had known the entire time.

Sirens wailed somewhere outside.

The woman in the back had managed to call emergency services before Richard noticed.

Richard turned toward the sound.

That moment was enough.

Ethan lunged for the coffin.

He grabbed the broken edge of the lid and pulled.

Claire pushed from underneath.

The cracked wood lifted several inches.

Richard swung the gun toward Ethan.

“STOP.”

A man in the front row tackled Richard from the side.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Plaster exploded over the flowers.

Guests screamed and scattered.

Two other men joined the struggle.

Richard fought with desperate strength, but the weapon slid across the polished floor.

Father Michael kicked it beneath a row of chairs.

Ethan tore at the broken coffin lid with both hands.

“Mom, I’m here.”

Claire made a muffled sound behind the tape.

He pulled harder.

The lid finally cracked open enough for two guests to help lift it.

Claire’s body was trembling violently.

Ethan climbed over the side and wrapped his arms around her.

She could barely move her bound hands.

He ripped the tape from her mouth.

Claire gasped so sharply that Ethan thought she might pass out.

Instead, she grabbed his face.

“You heard me.”

Ethan was crying now.

“Three knocks.”

Claire nodded.

“I knew you would remember.”

Police rushed through the front doors.

Richard stopped fighting.

For the first time that morning, fear appeared on his face.

An officer forced him onto the floor and handcuffed him.

Another officer rushed toward Claire.

Paramedics followed seconds later.

Ethan stayed beside his mother while they cut the restraints from her wrists.

Claire’s hands were bruised.

There was a needle mark near her elbow.

A paramedic checked her pulse.

Another examined her pupils.

“What did he give you?”

Claire swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“How long have you been inside?”

Her eyes moved toward Richard.

“At least fourteen hours.”

A stunned silence spread through the nearby officers.

Fourteen hours.

Richard had placed a living woman inside a coffin the night before her funeral.

Ethan squeezed her hand.

Claire looked at him.

“There’s something you need to know.”

One officer leaned closer.

Claire’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Richard didn’t do this because he wanted me dead.”

Ethan stared at her.

Claire glanced toward the police.

“He did it because I found something.”

Richard lifted his head from the floor.

For the first time, his calm expression completely disappeared.

“Claire.”

She looked directly at him.

“You should have made sure I was unconscious.”

Richard’s face went white.

Claire turned back to Ethan.

“There’s a blue flash drive hidden inside your old music box.”

Ethan froze.

“What’s on it?”

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

“Everything.”

May you like

And across the room, Richard stopped struggling.

Because he knew exactly what everything meant.
