Chapter 11 - THE COURTHOUSE FIRE

Smoke was already rising from the courthouse when the first federal vehicles arrived.

Flames glowed behind third-floor windows.

Firefighters rushed through the main entrance.

Victor Hale had used his access credentials thirty-eight minutes earlier.

Judge Mercer’s emergency security code had disabled two cameras.

Someone had entered the sealed records division.

Claire remained inside a federal vehicle with Ethan.

Ramirez joined agents heading toward the building.

Nora Bennett arrived moments later with her editor.

She was ordered to stay behind the perimeter.

Nobody listened.

The fire concentrated around probate archives.

Exactly where Mercer’s old cases were stored.

But Hale and Mercer made one mistake.

The courthouse had digitized most records the previous year.

The fire destroyed paper.

Not the entire history.

Agents found Victor Hale in an underground parking level.

He was attempting to leave in a maintenance truck.

He surrendered without resistance.

Judge Mercer was not with him.

Hale smiled while officers handcuffed him.

“You’re all very excited over paperwork.”

Ramirez held up a photograph of the underground cemetery room.

“Is that paperwork?”

Hale’s smile disappeared.

“Talk to my attorney.”

“You are an attorney.”

“Then you understand my answer.”

Agents searched his vehicle.

They found two passports.

Fifty thousand dollars in cash.

And a burner phone.

The phone contained one recent message.

BURN IT.

NO MORE MISTAKES.

The sender was identified only as R.

Richard was still in jail.

But investigators discovered something alarming.

He had been transferred earlier that evening for a medical examination after claiming chest pain.

The transport record carried Judge Mercer’s authorization.

Ramirez called the detention facility.

Richard Parker was gone.

The ambulance supposedly transporting him never reached the hospital.

The two officers assigned to escort him had been found unconscious inside an abandoned vehicle.

Richard had escaped.

Claire felt her blood turn cold when Ramirez told her.

“He’s coming for the ledger.”

Samuel shook his head.

“He’ll come for Ethan.”

Claire stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel designed every safeguard around his son.”

Samuel looked toward Ethan.

“Richard knows there may be more evidence only Ethan can unlock.”

Claire stood.

“We leave.”

Federal agents relocated them immediately.

But Richard was already moving.

At 11:43 p.m., Claire received a text from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Her sister Laura was tied to a chair.

Blood marked the corner of her mouth.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

BRING THE LEDGER.

COME ALONE.

Samuel looked furious.

“Do not answer.”

Claire’s hands shook.

“She’s my sister.”

“That’s exactly why he took her.”

A third message appeared.

There was an address.

An abandoned Bellweather warehouse by the river.

Midnight.

Thirty-seven minutes away.

Ramirez began organizing a tactical response.

Claire looked at her.

“He’ll kill Laura if he sees police.”

“He may kill her anyway.”

“I’m going.”

“You are not going alone.”

Claire nodded slowly.

But her eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

Ethan knew that expression.

His mother had already made a decision.

At 12:02 a.m., while Ramirez coordinated agents downstairs, Claire disappeared from the safe apartment.

So did Daniel’s black ledger.
