Chapter 16 - THE LAST ESCAPE
Evelyn was charged with Mercer’s murder before noon.
Victor Hale learned about it while sitting in federal custody.
Something broke inside him.
For years, Hale had believed Evelyn would protect the organization.
Now he understood she had killed Mercer simply because Mercer had become a liability.
Hale asked for a deal.
He gave prosecutors account passwords.
He identified corrupt officials.
He described how victims had been selected.
And he confirmed Richard’s role in Daniel Parker’s death.
According to Hale, Richard had driven the second vehicle that forced Daniel off the mountain road.
Mercer altered the investigation.
A medical examiner ignored suspicious injuries.
The death became an accident.
Hale also revealed why Claire had been placed inside a coffin alive.
Evelyn wanted no physical injuries that could suggest murder.
Richard planned to sedate Claire heavily enough that she would appear dead to anyone who briefly saw her.
A corrupt physician signed the paperwork.
No embalming was requested.
The coffin would remain closed.
Once buried, nobody would investigate.
Except Ethan heard three knocks.
The case became national news.
Nora Bennett published the first major article.
THE FUNERAL THAT EXPOSED A TWENTY-EIGHT-YEAR CONSPIRACY.
Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Families of missing victims called investigators.
Cold cases reopened across three states.
Richard finally agreed to cooperate.
But on the morning he was scheduled to give a formal statement, chaos erupted at the secure hospital.
A fire alarm sounded.
Sprinklers activated.
During the evacuation, a man wearing medical scrubs attacked one of Richard’s guards.
Richard ran.
Again.
This time investigators believed Evelyn had arranged the escape before her arrest.
A vehicle waited behind the hospital.
Richard vanished.
Claire was immediately moved.
Ethan was pulled from school.
Roadblocks went up.
Hours passed.
No Richard.
Then Claire noticed something.
The blue flash drive was still missing.
The original one.
Investigators had recovered copies through the mailed documents and Daniel’s ledger.
But whoever searched Ethan’s room had taken the drive.
Aaron Pike denied having it.
Victor Hale denied having it.
Evelyn claimed she had never seen it.
That left Richard.
“What was different about that drive?”
Claire asked Nora.
“Maybe nothing.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“He risked going to my house during the funeral aftermath.”
Ramirez looked at the evidence list.
“What did you copy?”
“Everything on his hidden computer.”
“Everything?”
Claire suddenly remembered a folder she had barely opened.
It contained video files.
She had copied them automatically.
The folder name was ARCHIVE.
Claire looked at Ramirez.
“The drive has recordings.”
“Of what?”
“I don’t know.”
Richard might have been willing to negotiate over financial crimes.
But recordings could contain murders.
Confessions.
Meetings.
Names.
Enough evidence to guarantee life in prison.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“He’ll destroy it.”
Claire shook her head.
“He would have already.”
“Then why keep it?”
Nora understood.
“Leverage.”
Richard needed something powerful enough to bargain with.
That evening, Claire received another unknown call.
Richard.
His voice sounded exhausted.
“I want immunity.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You kidnapped me.”
“I can give them Evelyn.”
“They already have her.”
“I can give them people bigger than Evelyn.”
Claire looked at Ramirez, who was tracing the call.
“Where is the drive?”
Richard ignored the question.
“Tell them I want a deal.”
“What’s on the videos?”
Silence.
Then Richard whispered.
“The reason your husband really died.”
The call disconnected.
Claire stared at the phone.
