Chapter 14 - GRANDMA EVELYN

Evelyn Parker lived in a mansion outside Bryn Mawr.
By the time federal agents arrived, the house was empty.
The closets still contained clothing.
Food remained in the refrigerator.
A cup of tea sat cold beside the sink.
She had left quickly.
Security cameras had been wiped.
Her driver was missing.
Her assistant was missing.
So was a black sedan.
Ethan struggled to understand.
Evelyn had treated him better than Richard sometimes did.
She remembered birthdays.
She brought him books.
Once, when Richard yelled at Ethan over a broken window, Evelyn told Richard to leave the boy alone.
“Was any of it real?”
Claire did not know.
People could be monsters in one room and kind in another.
That was one of the hardest truths Ethan was learning.
Nora Bennett began digging through Evelyn’s history.
Bellweather Capital began as a small estate-planning company in 1998.
Evelyn’s first husband had been a probate attorney.
After he died, the business expanded.
So did unusual cases connected to its clients.
Elderly investors vanished.
Family members signed unexpected transfers.
Estates changed ownership.
Insurance benefits went to shell companies.
Over twenty-eight years, the operation became almost invisible.
They did not rob banks.
They manipulated paperwork.
They targeted people whose disappearances could be explained.
Widows.
Divorced businessmen.
Estranged relatives.
People without large families.
And when victims resisted, Mercer provided legal cover.
Hale provided documents.
Richard managed logistics.
Daniel nearly exposed them.
Claire accidentally reopened his investigation.
Ethan destroyed the plan by hearing three knocks.
Nora published nothing yet.
The attorney general asked her to wait until arrests were complete.
She agreed reluctantly.
Then a traffic camera located Evelyn’s sedan.
It was heading north.
Toward the Canadian border.
Agents began tracking it.
But Claire noticed something odd.
“She won’t run.”
Ramirez looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Richard never believed in running.”
“She isn’t Richard.”
“She taught him.”
Claire thought about Evelyn.
Always composed.
Always planning several steps ahead.
“She’s going somewhere she thinks gives her leverage.”
Ethan suddenly spoke.
“The cabin.”
Claire turned.
“What cabin?”
“Grandma Evelyn has a cabin.”
“Where?”
“Richard took me once.”
Claire had never heard of it.
Ethan remembered a lake.
A long dirt road.
A red bridge.
And an old sign with the word HOLLOW.
Investigators searched property databases.
Evelyn owned no cabin.
But one Bellweather shell company owned 300 acres near Hollow Creek, Pennsylvania.
The same direction as the sedan.
Tactical teams mobilized.
Before they left, Claire received a phone call.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Evelyn’s voice came through.
Calm.
Almost warm.
“Claire.”
Claire’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?”
“You know.”
“What do you want?”
“To finish a conversation Daniel started six years ago.”
Ethan stepped closer.
Evelyn continued.
“Bring my grandson.”
Claire felt rage rise.
“He is not your grandson.”
A pause.
Then Evelyn said.
“That depends on what Richard never told you.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
“What are you talking about?”
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Ask yourself why Richard chose you specifically.”
“I already know.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice became almost gentle.
“You only know half the reason.”
The call ended.
Claire stared at the phone.
Ethan watched her.
“What did she mean?”
May you like
Claire had no answer.
But for the first time, she wondered whether the secrets surrounding Richard reached even deeper into Ethan’s life.
