Chapter 17 - DANIEL’S FINAL HOUR

Richard called again the next morning.

This time he gave an address.

An empty motel near Interstate 76.

Federal agents surrounded it.

Richard was not there.

But Room 12 contained a laptop.

The blue flash drive was connected to it.

No trap.

No explosives.

No Richard.

Just the evidence.

A text document filled the screen.

YOU WANT THE TRUTH.

WATCH FILE 04.

Ramirez disconnected the laptop from any network before opening the video.

Claire sat beside Ethan.

Samuel Reed stood behind them.

The footage was dated six years earlier.

It came from a dashboard camera.

Daniel’s car appeared on a mountain road.

Another vehicle followed.

Richard’s voice could be heard speaking to someone on the phone.

“He has the ledger.”

A woman answered.

Evelyn.

“Then recover it.”

“What about Parker?”

A pause.

“If necessary.”

Richard accelerated.

The footage showed his vehicle striking Daniel’s rear bumper.

Daniel’s car swerved.

Recovered.

Richard struck him again.

The vehicle crashed through the guardrail.

Claire turned away.

Ethan did not.

The recording continued.

Richard stopped.

He walked down the slope.

Daniel’s car had not yet fallen fully into the ravine.

Daniel was alive.

Injured.

He looked up as Richard approached.

“You.”

Richard crouched beside him.

“Where’s the ledger?”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“You’ll never find it.”

Richard searched the vehicle.

Nothing.

Daniel whispered something.

Richard leaned closer.

“You made a mistake.”

“What?”

“My son remembers everything.”

Richard stared at him.

Then Daniel said.

“He’ll remember you too.”

Ethan covered his mouth.

Richard looked toward the road.

Another vehicle arrived.

Judge Mercer stepped out.

Evelyn followed.

Claire stared in horror.

Evelyn approached Daniel.

“You should have taken the promotion.”

Daniel spat blood onto the ground.

“You mean the bribe.”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

She turned to Richard.

“Finish it.”

Richard hesitated.

Only for a moment.

Then he released the damaged parking brake.

Daniel’s car rolled backward.

Claire screamed.

The vehicle disappeared down the ravine.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan was crying silently.

Samuel placed a hand on his shoulder.

Claire’s grief felt strangely different from six years earlier.

Back then, she mourned an accident.

Now she mourned a murder.

Ramirez opened another file.

Video 07.

It showed Richard meeting Victor Hale and Mercer in a garage.

Video 11 showed Evelyn discussing payments.

Video 15 showed the corrupt physician preparing Claire’s false death certificate.

The blue drive was devastating.

Richard had kept recordings as insurance against his own partners.

Evelyn had created the organization.

But Richard never fully trusted her.

His paranoia had preserved the evidence that would destroy them all.

Then Ramirez found the final file.

It had been recorded after Claire was placed inside the coffin.

Richard stood beside Evelyn in the funeral home.

“She woke up once.”

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“Then increase the dose.”

“I already did.”

“Good.”

Richard looked toward the coffin.

“What about the boy?”

Evelyn answered.

“After the burial, send Ethan to me.”

“And when he turns eighteen?”

Evelyn smiled.

“He won’t.”

Claire stopped the video.

May you like

No one needed to hear more.

The conspiracy had never planned to leave Ethan alive long enough to inherit Daniel’s trust.
