Chapter 18 - THE BOY THEY UNDERESTIMATED

Ethan sat alone in the protected apartment that night.

Claire stood in the doorway.

She did not know how to comfort a twelve-year-old who had just watched the planning of his own future murder.

Finally, she sat beside him.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

“Stop.”

Claire nodded.

They were quiet.

Then Ethan asked.

“Did Dad know I would remember the knocks?”

Claire smiled through tears.

“Your father knew you remembered everything important.”

“He said it before they killed him.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked down at his hands.

“He trusted me.”

“He loved you.”

Claire pulled him close.

Across town, Richard Parker was still missing.

Investigators believed he had abandoned plans for immunity.

The discovery of the videos made any meaningful deal unlikely.

He faced murder charges.

Attempted murder.

Kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

And dozens of additional federal crimes.

A desperate man had nothing left to protect.

At 2:14 a.m., a security alarm sounded at the federal evidence facility.

Someone had attempted to enter using stolen credentials.

Agents responded.

The intruder escaped.

But a camera captured his face.

Richard.

He was trying to recover the blue drive.

Ramirez realized something.

“He thinks we haven’t copied it yet.”

Claire looked at her.

“Can we use that?”

“Yes.”

The task force created a controlled leak.

A false report was intentionally allowed to circulate.

The blue drive had supposedly been damaged.

Technicians would attempt one final recovery at a digital forensics laboratory the following night.

The location was deliberately named.

Richard took the bait.

At 11:06 p.m., cameras captured a van approaching the laboratory.

Richard entered through a service door.

Agents waited inside.

He reached the evidence room.

The blue drive sat on a table.

Richard grabbed it.

Lights turned on.

Ramirez stepped from behind a wall.

“It’s over.”

Richard looked around.

Agents blocked every exit.

Then Claire entered.

Ramirez had not wanted her there.

Claire insisted.

Richard stared at her.

“You never knew when to leave things alone.”

Claire almost smiled.

“That was Daniel.”

Richard’s face twisted.

“You think he was some hero?”

“I know what he was.”

“He destroyed your life.”

“No.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You did.”

Richard looked toward the agents.

Then toward the drive.

He suddenly raised his hand.

A small remote was inside it.

“Everybody stays back.”

Ramirez’s weapon came up.

“What is that?”

“Insurance.”

Richard claimed explosives were hidden in the building.

Agents hesitated.

Then a voice came through the intercom.

“You’re lying.”

Ethan.

Claire’s head snapped upward.

Ethan was inside the mobile command room outside.

He had been watching security feeds.

Richard stared toward the camera.

Ethan continued.

“You keep touching your left pocket when you lie.”

Richard froze.

Claire remembered.

He did.

Throughout their marriage, Richard touched his left jacket pocket whenever cornered.

Ethan had noticed.

Ramirez moved.

Agents tackled Richard.

The remote fell.

It was an ordinary garage-door opener.

No explosives existed.

Richard screamed as cuffs locked around his wrists.

“YOU LITTLE—”

Claire stepped between him and the camera.

“Do not speak to my son.”

Richard stared at her.

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“You lost because you never understood him.”

Richard was taken away.

This time, there would be no hospital escape.

No false medical transfer.

May you like

No hidden partner coming to rescue him.

For the first time since Daniel’s death, Richard Parker had nowhere left to run.
