Chapter 12 - THE RIVER WAREHOUSE

Claire drove through heavy rain toward the river.

She knew leaving alone was reckless.

She also knew Richard understood police procedure.

If he saw a convoy, Laura could die before anyone reached the door.

The warehouse stood behind rusted fencing near an abandoned shipping yard.

One light glowed inside.

Claire parked.

She carried the black ledger beneath her coat.

Her phone had been left in the car as instructed.

She entered.

“Richard.”

Her voice echoed.

A chair scraped somewhere in the darkness.

Then Laura appeared beneath a hanging work light.

Her wrists were tied.

Richard stood behind her.

He held a gun.

His funeral suit was gone.

He wore dark work clothes.

His face looked older than it had twenty-four hours earlier.

“Put the ledger on the floor.”

Claire stopped.

“Let her go.”

“Ledger first.”

“Laura first.”

Richard smiled.

“That confidence is new.”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I had it before you.”

His smile vanished.

“Daniel had it too.”

Claire’s chest tightened.

“You killed him.”

Richard did not deny it.

“He should have stopped digging.”

“You ran his car off the road.”

“He was given chances.”

Laura began crying.

Richard pressed the gun toward her shoulder.

“Ledger.”

Claire slowly placed it on the floor.

Richard moved forward.

Then he paused.

“You copied it.”

“No.”

“You always make copies.”

“I copied your laptop.”

He laughed.

“And look where that got you.”

“You mean alive?”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“I mean inside a coffin.”

Claire swallowed.

“You were going to bury me.”

“I needed you gone.”

“Why marry me at all?”

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely annoyed.

“Because Daniel hid things.”

Claire understood.

“You thought I knew where the ledger was.”

“I thought eventually you would find it.”

“You spent four years pretending to love me.”

Richard shrugged.

“It was easier than breaking into your life from outside.”

Claire felt something inside her turn to ice.

“What about Ethan?”

Richard glanced toward the ledger.

“The boy remembered more than I expected.”

Claire stepped forward.

“If you ever touch him—”

“You still think this is about family.”

Richard laughed.

“It was always about control.”

A sound came from somewhere above.

Richard looked toward the catwalk.

Claire heard it too.

A metallic creak.

Then three faint taps.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Her heart stopped.

Ethan.

Richard heard them.

His expression changed.

He aimed toward the darkness.

“Come out.”

Claire shouted.

“ETHAN, RUN.”

Richard fired once into the ceiling.

Laura screamed.

A figure moved behind stacked crates.

Richard chased it.

Claire rushed toward Laura.

She pulled at the restraints.

Outside, police sirens erupted.

Ramirez had discovered Claire missing almost immediately.

Ethan had secretly hidden in the back of Samuel’s vehicle when the task force followed.

Then he slipped into the warehouse through a side entrance.

Richard realized the sirens were approaching.

He grabbed Claire by the hair and pulled her backward.

The gun pressed against her ribs.

“Everybody stops.”

Ramirez entered with agents behind her.

“Drop the weapon.”

Richard dragged Claire toward the loading dock.

Ethan stood above them on the catwalk.

“Richard.”

Richard looked up.

Ethan held something in his hand.

Not a weapon.

A phone.

The screen displayed a recording.

“You admitted you killed my dad.”

Richard froze.

Ethan had recorded everything.

Claire saw the realization cross Richard’s face.

He raised the gun toward the catwalk.

Ramirez fired.

The bullet struck Richard’s shoulder.

His gun fell.

Claire dropped to the floor.

Agents rushed forward.

Richard screamed as they forced him down.

Ethan remained above, gripping the phone with both hands.

Richard looked toward him.

For six years, he had believed Daniel Parker’s son was simply a child standing in the way.

Now that child had captured the confession that could destroy him.
