Chapter 5 - THE MAN INSIDE WHITMORE

Richard did not react immediately.
That was how Claire knew the news was serious.
The company associated with the storage server was controlled by Thomas Keene.
Thomas had worked beside Richard for twenty-three years.
He had helped finance acquisitions.
He had attended Claire’s college graduation.
He had stood three rows behind Daniel at Claire’s wedding.
He was also Whitmore Infrastructure’s chief financial officer.
Claire stared at the ownership records.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Richard answered quietly.
“It makes too much sense.”
Thomas had recently opposed Richard on several board issues.
He had argued that the company needed outside capital.
He had supported closer cooperation with Daniel’s development empire.
Richard had dismissed the disagreements as strategy.
Now they looked different.
Marcus accessed recovered server logs.
Daniel’s team had uploaded audio files, medical photographs, private messages, and edited video clips into Thomas Keene’s storage environment.
The files were categorized.
Claire Emotional Episodes.
Claire Pregnancy Concerns.
Succession Contingency.
Richard Board Vulnerabilities.
Claire looked at her father.
“This isn’t just about me.”
“No.”
Richard’s voice was flat.
“It’s a corporate takeover.”
The plan slowly became visible.
Daniel would create evidence suggesting Claire was unstable.
Vanessa would provoke incidents.
Private investigators would capture selected moments.
Thomas would quietly convince Whitmore board members that Richard’s succession structure was dangerous.
Then Daniel would propose a merger or emergency governance arrangement.
If Richard resisted, they could use Claire’s supposed instability as leverage against the family trust.
If Claire filed for divorce before the plan matured, Daniel would argue that pregnancy had made her irrational.
Every path led toward the same objective.
Control.
Claire felt sick.
“I married him.”
Richard said nothing.
“I brought him into our family.”
Still Richard did not speak.
Claire looked at him.
“Say something.”
Richard pulled out the chair beside her.
“You married a man you believed loved you.”
“That doesn’t make me less responsible.”
“No.”
Richard met her eyes.
“It makes you responsible for what you do next.”
Claire inhaled slowly.
That was the answer she needed.
Not pity.
Not absolution.
A decision.
She looked at Rachel.
“What happens if we release the mirror footage now?”
Rachel considered it.
“Publicly?”
“Yes.”
“It destroys their narrative.”
“But?”
“It alerts Thomas that we know he’s involved.”
Claire nodded.
“So we keep it quiet.”
Richard looked almost impressed.
“We keep everything quiet.”
Claire leaned over the table.
“And we let Daniel believe the deletion worked.”
Rachel understood immediately.
“You want him to continue.”
“I want him to reveal the rest.”
Richard looked at his daughter.
“You’re seven months pregnant.”
Claire looked back.
“And yesterday, my husband helped his mistress lock me in a room after she shoved me into a mirror.”
Her voice remained steady.
“I am not meeting him alone.”
“I am not going back to the penthouse.”
“And I am not taking unnecessary risks.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“But I am also not spending the next two months hiding while they rewrite what happened.”
Richard nodded once.
“Then we do this carefully.”
That evening, Claire sent Daniel one message.
I am safe.
I need time.
I don’t want this becoming public.
Daniel responded in less than a minute.
Thank God.
Please don’t listen to your father.
We can fix this privately.
Claire stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
Vanessa is devastated.
She says she only reached for you because you were yelling.
Claire almost smiled.
There it was.
The revised story.
The push had already become a reach.
The locked door would become concern.
The stolen phone would become protection.
Claire typed carefully.
I don’t remember everything clearly.
Daniel took the bait.
That’s okay.
You were extremely upset.
Claire handed the phone to Rachel.
Rachel read it.
“He’s establishing impairment.”
Claire nodded.
“Let him.”
Another message arrived.
Daniel wrote:
Maybe it would be best if you spoke with Dr. Feldman again.
Claire frowned.
She had never met a Dr. Feldman.
Rachel immediately searched the name.
Her expression darkened.
“Psychiatrist.”
Richard looked up.
“Connected to Daniel?”
Rachel turned the laptop.
“Consultant for Mercer Development’s executive wellness program.”
Claire stared at Daniel’s message.
Now they had found the next piece.
May you like
Daniel had not only prepared witnesses.
He had prepared a doctor.
