Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED DOOR

The soft click of the dressing-room lock changed everything.

Claire stopped looking at the broken mirror.

She looked only at Daniel.

Her husband stood between her and the hallway with one hand still resting on the brass latch.

Vanessa remained near the vanity with Claire’s phone pressed against her chest.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Claire could hear the faint hum of the penthouse ventilation system.

She could hear traffic forty-two floors below.

Most of all, she could hear her father’s voice from years earlier.

When someone blocks the obvious exit, sweetheart, find the exit they forgot.

Claire lowered her hand from her stomach.

“Daniel.”

He swallowed.

“Just listen to me.”

“Unlock the door.”

“We need to talk before you do anything impulsive.”

Claire almost laughed.

He had allowed his mistress to shove his pregnant wife into a mirror.

Now he was describing her reaction as impulsive.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“We’re trying to keep you from ruining three lives because you’re emotional.”

Claire looked at her.

“Three?”

Vanessa’s confidence flickered.

Claire caught it.

Daniel did too.

“Vanessa.”

His warning came too late.

Claire understood immediately.

Daniel had not simply been having an affair.

They had been building something together.

A plan.

An exit.

Possibly a financial one.

Possibly something worse.

Claire glanced toward the bathroom.

Daniel followed her eyes.

That was his mistake.

He moved half a step toward the bathroom door.

Claire moved first.

She shoved the dressing stool into his path.

Daniel stumbled against it.

Claire crossed the room in three quick steps and reached the bathroom.

Vanessa grabbed the back of her cream dress.

Claire twisted free.

The fabric tore near her shoulder.

“Don’t touch me.”

Her voice was quiet.

That frightened Vanessa more than screaming would have.

Claire slammed the bathroom door and locked it.

Daniel struck it from the other side.

“Claire, open the door.”

Claire reached for the wall phone beside the bathtub.

No dial tone.

Daniel had disconnected it.

She stared at the receiver.

Another confirmation.

This had not been improvised.

They had prepared for resistance.

Claire turned slowly.

The bathroom had no window.

No second door.

But the penthouse had a smart-home emergency panel beside the shower.

Daniel apparently had forgotten that.

Claire opened the protective cover.

The screen lit up.

EMERGENCY SERVICES.

FIRE.

MEDICAL.

SECURITY.

She pressed all three.

Outside, Daniel heard the alarm activate.

His tone changed instantly.

“Claire.”

She said nothing.

“Claire, cancel that.”

The penthouse siren remained silent because the emergency system was designed to notify building security discreetly.

But Daniel knew what she had done.

Vanessa began whispering rapidly.

Claire could not hear every word through the door.

She heard enough.

“Camera.”

“Delete.”

“Office.”

Then Daniel said something that chilled her.

“The copy is already off-site.”

Claire pressed her ear to the door.

Vanessa hissed.

“You said nobody had access.”

“I said nobody knew.”

Claire stepped away.

Camera.

Copy.

Off-site.

They were not talking about the broken mirror.

They were talking about something recorded before tonight.

A minute later, heavy footsteps approached from the hallway.

Daniel unlocked the dressing-room door.

A male voice called from outside.

“Mr. Mercer?”

Building security.

Claire unlocked the bathroom.

She stepped out slowly.

Daniel had moved three feet away from Vanessa.

Vanessa had placed Claire’s phone back on the vanity.

Both were already rearranging the scene.

Daniel pointed toward the mirror.

“My wife lost her balance.”

Claire stared at him.

Vanessa nodded.

“She’s been having a difficult pregnancy.”

The security supervisor looked at Claire’s torn dress.

Then at the shattered mirror.

Then at the red pressure mark forming across Claire’s shoulder.

“What happened, Mrs. Mercer?”

Daniel answered for her.

“She fell.”

Claire looked directly at the supervisor.

“My husband’s mistress pushed me into that mirror.”

The room went completely still.

“And then my husband locked the door while she took my phone.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That’s not what happened.”

Claire reached for her phone.

Vanessa tried to stop her.

The security supervisor stepped between them.

“Ma’am.”

Vanessa froze.

Claire picked up the phone.

She did not call her father.

Not yet.

She called her obstetrician.

Then she called her attorney.

Only after both calls had been made did she dial Richard Whitmore.

He answered before the second ring.

“Claire?”

She looked at Daniel.

“I need you to come to Manhattan.”

Richard did not ask why.

He heard something in his daughter’s voice that erased every unnecessary question.

“I’m leaving now.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“Bring your security team.”

There was a pause.

May you like

When Richard answered, his voice had become frighteningly calm.

“I already am.”
