Chapter 2 - THE HOSPITAL RECORD

Claire was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital less than twenty minutes later.
Daniel insisted on riding in the ambulance.
Claire refused.
Vanessa disappeared before the elevator doors closed.
Claire noticed that.
So did building security.
The paramedic documented the swelling near Claire’s shoulder.
He documented the torn dress.
He documented her description of the shove.
Most importantly, he documented Claire’s statement that she had been prevented from immediately calling for medical help.
Every word became part of the official record.
At the hospital, Claire was examined for injuries while the baby was placed on continuous monitoring.
For twenty terrifying minutes, she stared at the fetal heart monitor.
The rhythm remained steady.
Her daughter was alive.
The doctor found bruising across Claire’s shoulder and upper back but no fracture.
There were several superficial cuts from glass fragments.
The baby showed no immediate signs of distress.
Claire finally exhaled.
Then a nurse entered.
“Mrs. Mercer, your husband is outside.”
“I don’t want him in here.”
The nurse nodded without hesitation.
“Understood.”
“He may tell you I’m confused.”
The nurse looked at her carefully.
“He already tried.”
Claire felt something cold settle inside her.
“What did he say?”
“That you’ve been experiencing severe emotional changes related to pregnancy.”
Claire looked toward the door.
Daniel was moving faster than she expected.
He was trying to establish the narrative before Richard arrived.
“Please document that he said that.”
“I already did.”
For the first time that evening, Claire almost smiled.
Daniel had spent years assuming that quiet people were easy to manipulate.
He had forgotten that quiet people noticed everything.
Forty minutes later, Claire’s attorney arrived.
Rachel Sloan was fifty-one, sharply dressed, disciplined, and incapable of being intimidated by expensive men.
She placed a leather folder on the bedside table.
“Start at the beginning.”
Claire told her everything.
The affair suspicions.
The comments about her mental state.
The push.
The locked door.
The disconnected bathroom phone.
The conversation about a camera and an off-site copy.
Rachel stopped writing.
“Say that last part again.”
Claire repeated it.
Rachel’s expression changed.
“You’re sure they said camera?”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel said a copy was already off-site?”
“Yes.”
Rachel closed the notebook.
“Then tonight may have been about more than frightening you.”
Claire looked down at her stomach.
“What do you think they were doing?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Rachel leaned closer.
“But people don’t discuss deleting camera footage unless the camera recorded something they’re afraid of.”
At 11:43 p.m., Richard Whitmore entered the hospital room.
He did not storm inside.
He did not raise his voice.
He walked straight to his daughter and kissed her forehead.
Then he looked at the bruising on her shoulder.
Something changed in his face.
Claire had seen her father angry before.
This was different.
This was calculation.
“Where is he?”
Rachel answered.
“Downstairs with his attorney.”
Richard nodded.
“Good.”
Claire took his hand.
“Dad, I don’t want you doing anything reckless.”
Richard looked at her.
“I didn’t build my company by being reckless.”
He turned toward Rachel.
“What do we know?”
Rachel explained the emergency call records, building security statements, medical documentation, and possible footage.
Richard listened without interrupting.
Then he asked one question.
“Who controls the penthouse security system?”
Claire frowned.
“Daniel handles the smart-home accounts.”
Richard looked at Rachel.
“That changes tonight.”
Rachel nodded.
Richard called one of his security directors.
“Preserve every camera feed in the Mercer residence and the building common areas.”
The man answered through the speaker.
“Already requested.”
“Don’t request.”
Richard’s voice remained level.
“Preserve.”
“Yes, sir.”
Five minutes later, the security director called back.
His tone was different.
“We have a problem.”
Richard stood.
“What problem?”
“The dressing-room camera feed is missing.”
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
Richard’s expression did not move.
“How much is missing?”
“Exactly eighteen minutes.”
Rachel looked at Claire.
The shove had happened inside those eighteen minutes.
Richard asked another question.
“Can it be recovered?”
“We’re checking backups.”
There was silence on the line.
Then the security director added something else.
“But somebody accessed the penthouse system remotely seven minutes after Mrs. Mercer left for the hospital.”
Richard turned slowly toward Claire.
“From where?”
May you like
The answer came immediately.
“Daniel Mercer’s corporate office.”
