Chapter 20 - THE MIRROR

Eighteen months after the night of the shattered mirror, Claire returned to the Manhattan penthouse.

She had not lived there since the incident.

The property had remained tied up during the divorce.

Now it belonged entirely to her.

Marcus accompanied her inside.

So did Richard.

The rooms looked smaller than Claire remembered.

The furniture had been removed.

Daniel’s office was empty.

The dressing-room door stood open.

Claire stopped outside it.

Richard watched her carefully.

“You don’t have to go in.”

“I know.”

Claire entered.

The broken mirror had been removed long ago.

A clean wall stood in its place.

For several moments, she simply looked at the empty space.

She remembered Vanessa’s hands.

The impact.

The sound of glass.

Daniel closing the door.

Her own reflection split into fragments.

Then she remembered what happened afterward.

The hospital.

The second camera.

The boardroom.

The truth.

Eleanor.

Claire touched the wall.

Richard stood behind her.

“What are you going to do with the apartment?”

“Sell it.”

He nodded.

Claire smiled.

“Not because I’m afraid of it.”

“I know.”

“I just don’t want it.”

Richard looked around.

“Fair enough.”

Claire turned toward the doorway.

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

Claire noticed immediately.

“What?”

Marcus ended the call.

“There’s something you should know.”

Richard frowned.

“About Daniel?”

“No.”

Marcus looked at Claire.

“The federal team finished reviewing one of the final encrypted drives from the Riverside property.”

Claire felt the old tension return.

“What was on it?”

“A list.”

“What kind of list?”

Marcus hesitated.

“People Daniel believed had helped him.”

Claire looked at Richard.

“Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Feldman?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not move.

Claire understood.

“There’s another name.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marcus handed her the phone.

At first, Claire thought she had misread it.

She looked again.

The name was unmistakable.

Someone who had attended her wedding.

Someone who had visited her after Eleanor’s birth.

Someone Richard trusted enough to allow inside the Whitmore townhouse without being searched.

Claire slowly lifted her eyes.

Richard saw her expression.

“Claire?”

She turned the screen toward him.

For the first time since the conspiracy began, Richard Whitmore looked genuinely stunned.

Claire looked back at the empty wall where the shattered mirror had once stood.

Daniel Mercer had been convicted.

Thomas Keene had confessed.

Vanessa Crane had testified.

Dr. Feldman had fallen.

The marriage was over.

Her daughter was safe.

Her life belonged to her again.

But the final encrypted drive proved something none of them had considered.

Daniel had not created the entire plan.

Someone had taught him where to look.

Someone had given him information Thomas did not possess.

Someone had been inside the Whitmore family long before Daniel ever married Claire.

Claire stared at the name one final time.

Then she locked the phone.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at her.

“Yes?”

May you like

“We’re not finished.”
