Chapter 15 - THOMAS TALKS

Thomas Keene remained silent for six days.

Then his attorneys asked for a meeting.

Richard refused to attend.

Claire went instead.

Rachel sat beside her.

Federal investigators sat across the room.

Thomas entered wearing a gray suit without cuff links.

The absence of those small details made him look strangely ordinary.

Claire had known him almost her entire life.

Now she studied him like a stranger.

Thomas looked at her.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

Claire did not respond.

Thomas sat.

His lawyer began.

“My client is prepared to cooperate.”

Rachel leaned back.

“Fully?”

Thomas answered himself.

“Yes.”

“Then start with Daniel.”

Thomas looked toward Claire.

“He approached me three years ago.”

Claire felt her stomach drop.

The affair with Vanessa had lasted less than a year.

The plan had begun long before her.

“What did he want?”

“Influence.”

“Over my father?”

“Over Whitmore.”

Thomas explained slowly.

Daniel had always believed Richard would never give him a real place inside the empire.

He viewed Claire’s marriage as an opportunity that had failed to deliver enough access.

So he looked for leverage.

Thomas had leverage.

Harbor 9.

Old financial disputes.

Board relationships.

Daniel had ambition.

They began sharing information.

At first, Thomas claimed, it was purely corporate.

Then Claire became pregnant.

Everything changed.

Daniel learned that the baby would trigger generational trust protections.

He realized time was running out.

“He said if he ever wanted real influence, it had to happen before the birth.”

Claire stared at Thomas.

“And you agreed.”

Thomas looked down.

“I helped.”

“Why?”

Thomas’s face tightened.

“Because your father was preparing to replace me.”

Richard had never mentioned that.

Thomas continued.

“I spent twenty-three years building that company with him.”

“And that made it yours?”

“No.”

Thomas looked at Claire.

“But resentment makes people believe stupid things.”

Claire thought of Vanessa.

Daniel.

Thomas.

Three people who believed proximity to power entitled them to ownership of it.

“What was Plan B?”

Thomas took a long time to answer.

“I didn’t know all of it.”

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“What did you know?”

“He wanted Dr. Feldman available during the delivery.”

Claire’s fingers tightened.

“Why?”

“To create an emergency psychiatric assessment if you resisted signing documents.”

The room went silent.

Claire felt the baby move.

Thomas looked sick.

“Daniel believed the stress of labor would make it easier to describe you as disoriented.”

Claire stared at him.

“You were going to let him do that.”

Thomas whispered.

“Yes.”

“While I was giving birth.”

“Yes.”

Claire stood.

Rachel touched her arm.

Claire remained standing.

“What documents?”

Thomas looked at the investigators.

“Temporary voting proxy.”

“Custody-related authorizations.”

“Asset management powers.”

Claire felt something inside her become absolutely clear.

Daniel did not simply want her reputation.

He wanted a moment when pain, exhaustion, and medication might make her easier to overpower.

Thomas lowered his head.

“There was another condition.”

Claire waited.

“If you signed voluntarily, the plan ended there.”

“And if I didn’t?”

May you like

Thomas looked at her.

“Daniel said Feldman would handle it.”
