Chapter 13 - VANESSA'S TESTIMONY

Vanessa was placed under protective supervision after police found her.

She refused to see Daniel.

She agreed to speak with prosecutors.

Her first interview lasted six hours.

Her second lasted four.

Claire did not attend either.

She did not want Vanessa’s cooperation confused with forgiveness.

Three days later, Rachel brought Claire the summary.

Vanessa had confirmed the affair.

She had confirmed Daniel’s plan to provoke Claire.

She had confirmed payments to investigators.

She had confirmed conversations involving Thomas.

She had also admitted to deleting the primary security footage.

Claire read every page.

Then she reached a section that made her stop.

Daniel had talked about the baby.

Not emotionally.

Strategically.

According to Vanessa, Daniel believed the pregnancy created a narrow window.

If Claire could be declared unstable before giving birth, Daniel thought he could petition for temporary authority over certain family decisions.

After the child was born, Claire’s position could become more sympathetic publicly.

So he wanted the conflict resolved before delivery.

Claire placed the document down.

Her hands trembled.

Rachel noticed.

“We can stop.”

“No.”

Claire continued reading.

Daniel had also discussed divorce.

He wanted Claire portrayed as dangerous before filing.

That would strengthen his custody position.

Claire closed the file.

For the first time, the entire plan became personal in a way even the mirror had not.

Daniel had been planning to use their daughter as leverage.

Rachel sat beside her.

“He is not going to get custody based on this record.”

Claire nodded.

She knew that logically.

Her body did not care about logic.

The baby kicked.

Claire pressed a hand against the movement.

Rachel waited.

Finally, Claire spoke.

“I want the divorce filed today.”

“It’s ready.”

“I want every financial preservation order you can legally request.”

“Already drafted.”

“I want no direct contact.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at the folder.

“And I want the baby protected from his companies, his trusts, and anyone acting on his behalf.”

Rachel nodded.

“We’ll build that into everything we can.”

That afternoon, Daniel was served at Teterboro Airport.

His jet never left.

He stood on the tarmac beside two attorneys when the papers arrived.

A photographer captured the moment.

The image spread across financial media within hours.

Daniel Mercer.

Divorce petition in one hand.

Federal subpoena in the other.

By evening, Mercer Development shares in privately traded debt vehicles were collapsing.

Banks froze discretionary credit lines.

Two partners suspended joint ventures.

Three board members resigned.

Daniel released a statement claiming he was the victim of a coordinated attack by Richard Whitmore.

Claire did not respond.

Richard did.

He held a press conference about Harbor 9.

He released the authentic memo.

He announced an independent review.

He publicly acknowledged that his company had failed to investigate warning signs adequately decades earlier.

Then a reporter asked about Daniel.

Richard looked into the cameras.

“My daughter’s marriage is her matter.”

The reporter pushed.

“Do you believe Daniel Mercer targeted her to influence Whitmore Infrastructure?”

Richard remained calm.

“I believe evidence should speak before powerful men do.”

That clip spread farther than Daniel’s statement.

Claire watched it from the townhouse.

She smiled for the first time in days.

Then Marcus walked into the room.

His expression erased the smile.

“What happened?”

He placed a printed email in front of her.

It had been sent from Daniel’s private account two months earlier.

To an unknown recipient.

The subject line contained only two words.

PLAN B.
