Chapter 16 - THE ARREST

Dr. Feldman was arrested two days later.

Investigators found draft evaluations on his computer.

Several had been written before he ever met Claire.

One described Claire as demonstrating paranoid ideation.

Another claimed she showed impaired judgment.

A third recommended temporary medical supervision during childbirth.

The creation dates made the scheme undeniable.

Feldman had prepared conclusions before conducting an examination.

Daniel’s attorneys continued insisting there had been no conspiracy.

Then Vanessa provided the final link.

A voice recording.

She had secretly recorded Daniel after he began threatening to blame her.

The audio was devastating.

Daniel’s voice was clear.

“If Claire signs before the baby arrives, nobody has to know anything.”

Vanessa asked.

“And if she refuses?”

Daniel answered.

“Feldman creates the medical problem.”

Vanessa said something quieter.

“What if Richard fights it?”

Daniel laughed.

“By the time he understands, the proxy will already be active.”

Claire listened only once.

That was enough.

Daniel was arrested the following morning as he left his attorney’s office.

The charges initially focused on conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, evidence tampering, fraud-related conduct, and obstruction.

Additional charges remained under review.

News cameras filled the sidewalk.

Daniel did not look frightened.

He looked furious.

He spotted Claire’s attorney across the street and shouted something reporters could not clearly hear.

By afternoon, the footage was everywhere.

Daniel’s company placed him on immediate leave.

The board appointed an independent committee.

Lenders accelerated investigations.

Former employees began contacting authorities.

A structure Daniel had spent fifteen years building began collapsing in days.

Claire did not celebrate.

Her marriage was ending.

The father of her unborn daughter was in custody.

Her private life had become financial news.

There was nothing joyful about any of it.

That evening, Richard found her sitting in the nursery they had prepared inside the townhouse.

The walls were pale.

The crib was still unassembled.

Boxes remained unopened.

Richard sat on the floor beside her.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Claire said.

“I keep thinking about the version of him I married.”

Richard nodded.

“I know.”

“Was that version ever real?”

Richard considered the question.

“Probably.”

Claire looked at him.

“You think so?”

“People aren’t usually one thing forever.”

He looked toward the unopened crib.

“Daniel may have loved you once.”

“That almost makes it worse.”

“Yes.”

Richard did not argue.

Claire wiped her eyes.

“I don’t want her growing up thinking her father was a monster.”

Richard looked at his daughter carefully.

“Then don’t teach her that.”

Claire frowned.

“What do I teach her?”

“The truth at the age she can carry it.”

Richard stood.

“Tell her he made choices.”

“Tell her choices have consequences.”

“Tell her powerful people are still responsible for what they do.”

Claire looked toward the crib.

“And what if she asks whether he loved her?”

Richard’s expression softened.

“You tell her you don’t know what was in his heart.”

May you like

Then he touched Claire’s shoulder gently.

“But you know what was in yours.”
