The email had no message body.
Only an attachment.
The attachment had been deleted.
Marcus’s team recovered fragments from a backup server.
The document appeared to be a contingency plan.
Daniel had written it himself.
Sections were missing.
Enough remained to make everyone uncomfortable.
IF CLAIRE REFUSES EVALUATION.
IF RICHARD INTERVENES.
IF VANESSA BECOMES UNRELIABLE.
IF BOARD ACTION FAILS.
Claire read the headings twice.
Every likely failure had been anticipated.
Except one.
Daniel had underestimated the second camera.
“What was Plan B?”
Marcus shook his head.
“We don’t have the complete file.”
Rachel looked through the recovered fragments.
One phrase appeared repeatedly.
Riverside property.
Claire frowned.
“What Riverside property?”
Richard answered immediately.
“Daniel owns an unfinished development along the Hudson.”
Marcus checked corporate records.
The project had been dormant for eight months.
No active construction.
No tenants.
No public reason for Daniel to visit it.
Yet his vehicle had entered the property four times during the previous six weeks.
The last visit occurred the night before Vanessa pushed Claire.
Police obtained a warrant.
The search began before sunrise.
Inside a locked site office, investigators found file boxes.
Hard drives.
Burner phones.
Prescription records.
Photographs of Claire.
Copies of her father’s travel schedule.
Maps of Whitmore facilities.
And one sealed envelope labeled DELIVERY ROOM.
Claire felt physically ill when Rachel told her.
“What was inside?”
Rachel hesitated.
“Hospital authorization drafts.”
“For what?”
“Visitor access.”
Claire stared at her.
Daniel had prepared documents giving himself and two unnamed individuals expanded access during Claire’s delivery.
Her actual medical preferences were different.
She had already instructed her obstetrician that only Daniel and Richard would be allowed near her during labor.
The draft documents changed that.
Vanessa was listed as Claire’s personal assistant.
Dr. Feldman was listed as an emergency mental-health consultant.
Claire stood so quickly her chair moved backward.
“No.”
Rachel rose.
“They were drafts.”
“No.”
Claire pressed both hands to her stomach.
“They were planning to do something when I gave birth.”
Richard entered the room during the final sentence.
His face hardened.
“What?”
Rachel explained.
Richard immediately contacted the hospital’s legal department.
Every access preference was locked.
Passwords were changed.
Security alerts were added.
Photographs of Daniel, Vanessa, Feldman, and several Mercer employees were distributed to the relevant team.
Claire’s scheduled delivery plan was transferred to a private medical facility with independent security.
For the first time, Claire understood why Plan B had terrified Daniel enough to hide it separately.
If the board strategy failed, he still intended to control the moment when Claire was physically most vulnerable.
Marcus returned to the recovered email.
“There’s one more fragment.”
He turned the screen.
A sentence appeared between damaged sections.
The child changes the trust structure immediately upon live birth.
Richard’s expression changed.
Claire looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Richard answered carefully.
“Your grandfather’s trust includes generational provisions.”
“Meaning?”
“When your daughter is born, part of your ownership becomes protected for her benefit.”
Claire stared.
“Daniel knew?”
“He knew you had inheritance provisions.”
“Did he know the exact terms?”
Richard looked at Thomas’s name on another file.
“He did if Thomas told him.”
Claire finally saw the entire timeline.
Daniel’s urgency had never been random.
