Chapter 4 - THE TIMELINE

Julian left his own wedding reception for twelve minutes.
He claimed he needed privacy for an urgent business call.
No one questioned him.
People worth billions were permitted eccentricities.
He entered a private office above the ballroom and locked the door.
Then he opened the calendar on his phone.
Eight months earlier.
October 17.
The Sterling Foundation Autumn Gala.
He remembered the date instantly.
Elena had attended alone because Julian had spent the first half of the evening in a board dinner.
When he arrived, he found her standing beneath a chandelier in a black velvet dress.
She looked tired.
Beautiful.
Distant.
They had barely spoken in weeks.
But something happened that night.
Perhaps it was nostalgia.
Perhaps resentment.
Perhaps the final remains of a marriage neither of them knew how to bury.
They argued in the car.
They argued in the foyer.
Then Elena asked one quiet question.
“Was there ever a day when you still chose me?”
Julian had answered by kissing her.
The memory came back with humiliating clarity.
The bedroom.
The rain against the windows.
Elena crying afterward while pretending she was not.
Julian leaving before dawn because Chloe had called about a crisis in Singapore.
He had never spoken to Elena about that night again.
Three weeks later, divorce proceedings accelerated.
Julian stared at the calendar.
If Elena’s child had been born at full term today, conception could line up almost exactly.
There was a knock.
“Julian?”
Chloe.
He closed the calendar.
“Come in.”
She entered carrying two champagne glasses.
“I thought my husband might want to make a toast with his wife.”
Julian took one glass but did not drink.
Chloe watched him.
“You calculated it.”
He looked at her.
“Calculated what?”
“Don’t insult me.”
She placed her glass down.
“The baby.”
Julian said nothing.
“The timing proves nothing.”
“I know.”
“You’re acting like it proves everything.”
“I said I know.”
Chloe folded her arms.
“Then come downstairs.”
“I will.”
She moved toward him.
“I spent years watching Elena manipulate you.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Chloe stared.
“What kind of question is that?”
“A simple one.”
“She controlled your moods.”
“How?”
“She made you feel guilty about work.”
“When?”
“Julian.”
“She asked me to come home for dinner.”
“She complained constantly.”
“She rarely complained at all.”
Chloe’s face stiffened.
Something had shifted.
Julian did not yet know why.
He only knew he could suddenly hear the exaggerations he had accepted for years.
Chloe stepped closer.
“Do not let one baby erase what she did to you.”
“What did she do to me?”
“She embarrassed you.”
“How?”
“She made scenes.”
“When?”
Silence.
Julian stared at her.
Chloe’s mouth tightened.
“This is cruel.”
“No.”
He placed the untouched champagne down.
“It’s specific.”
She turned away.
“You are ruining our wedding night over a woman you divorced.”
Julian walked to the window.
Below them, Manhattan glittered beneath snow.
“I need to know if he’s mine.”
Chloe laughed once.
The sound contained no humor.
“And if he is?”
Julian looked back.
Chloe’s eyes were bright.
Not with sadness.
With fear.
“What happens to us if he is?”
“I don’t know.”
“That isn’t good enough.”
“It’s the truth.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“You do know.”
Julian stayed silent.
Chloe stepped closer.
“If Elena gave you the one thing everyone said she couldn’t, you will rewrite your entire marriage.”
“That depends on how much of it was written incorrectly the first time.”
Chloe went pale.
Julian saw it.
May you like
And for the first time, the possibility formed clearly.
Maybe Elena had not been the only person lying during their divorce.
