Chapter 18 - CHLOE’S LAST MOVE

Chloe did not disappear quietly.
Three days after Robert’s suspension, every major media outlet in New York received an anonymous packet.
It contained portions of Elena’s medical history.
Photographs from the private investigation.
Divorce transcripts.
And a forged document claiming Elena had demanded fifty million dollars from Julian in exchange for keeping Alexander out of court.
The story exploded.
Elena woke at 5:40 a.m. to sixty-three messages.
By six, Nathan was at her house.
By six-thirty, Julian’s attorneys were calling.
By seven, photographers surrounded the block.
Amelia paced the kitchen.
“I want to run her over.”
Nathan looked up.
“As counsel, I recommend against that.”
“Thank you, Nathan.”
Elena sat at the kitchen table.
Alexander slept against her chest.
She felt strangely calm.
Perhaps there was a limit to humiliation.
Once strangers had debated your fertility on television, very little remained sacred.
Nathan placed the alleged agreement before her.
“This signature is fake.”
“I know.”
“The metadata is sloppy.”
“Good.”
“We can prove it.”
“Better.”
Julian arrived twenty minutes later.
Elena stared when he entered.
“You should not be here.”
“I came through the garage.”
“That isn’t what I meant.”
Julian placed his phone on the table.
“I know who distributed the files.”
“Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Her former deputy confessed.”
Nathan looked up.
“Confessed to what?”
“Chloe instructed the communications team to prepare the package weeks ago.”
Elena went still.
“Weeks.”
“Yes.”
“Before Robert was suspended.”
“Yes.”
“So she planned this.”
Julian nodded.
“She kept copies of Elena’s medical records.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“That matters.”
“I know.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“What are you going to do?”
“Hold a press conference.”
“No.”
Everyone stared at her.
Julian frowned.
“Elena.”
“No.”
“She used my company systems.”
“Then deal with your company.”
“She attacked you.”
“Yes.”
“I need to correct it.”
“You don’t get to become my rescuer now.”
Julian stopped.
Elena stood carefully.
Alexander remained against her shoulder.
“You had an army of communications people when you destroyed my reputation.”
Julian’s face tightened.
“I know.”
“You let them describe me as unstable.”
“Yes.”
“You let your attorneys discuss my medical history.”
“Yes.”
“You never corrected anyone.”
“No.”
Elena looked him in the eyes.
“So if there is going to be a correction, I will make it.”
Julian remained silent.
Nathan smiled faintly.
“What do you want to do?”
Elena looked toward the television.
A reporter stood outside her townhouse.
For six months, she had hidden.
She had believed dignity meant silence.
Sometimes it did.
Sometimes silence simply left space for other people to write your story.
“Schedule the press conference.”
Julian nodded.
“At Sterling headquarters?”
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“At the foundation hall.”
The Sterling Foundation Hall was where Julian and Elena had hosted their first charity gala as a married couple.
It was where Chloe first began working closely with Julian.
It was where Elena had once believed she belonged.
Nathan asked,
“When?”
Elena looked down at Alexander.
“Tonight.”
That evening, three hundred journalists received invitations.
Only one sentence appeared on the notice.
Elena Bennett will address recent statements concerning her son, her medical privacy, and Sterling Family Holdings.
Chloe saw the announcement from a hotel suite.
She smiled.
Then she opened another file.
Her last piece of leverage.
May you like
A private recording of Julian.
A recording that, if released correctly, could destroy the reconciliation between Julian and his son before it ever began.
