Chapter 15 - THE BOARDROOM RETURN
Elena returned to Sterling Global seven weeks after Alexander’s birth.
Not as Julian’s wife.
Not as a guest.
Not as the woman who used to enter through the executive elevators because everyone assumed her access belonged to her husband.
She entered as trustee for Alexander Sterling.
The lobby went silent.
Elena wore a navy suit.
No diamonds except a pair of simple earrings.
Her old assistant nearly cried when she saw her.
Several executives avoided eye contact.
Others suddenly became intensely interested in their phones.
Elena understood.
Six months earlier, many of them had watched Julian erase her from the company.
Some helped.
Most simply stayed quiet.
Nathan walked beside her.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“No.”
“You’re walking slower than usual.”
“My shoes hurt.”
“Sure.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Julian stood at the far end.
Their eyes met.
He did not smile.
Neither did she.
That was safer.
Robert Sterling sat near the center.
Several independent directors attended remotely.
The meeting began.
The first issue involved Alexander’s trust.
The second concerned Chloe’s expense audit.
The third concerned restoration of Elena’s professional credits.
That one surprised the room.
Julian introduced it himself.
“Several corporate strategy initiatives originally developed by Elena Bennett were reassigned or reattributed during our divorce.”
Robert frowned.
“Why are we discussing this?”
“Because they were hers.”
“Intellectual property belongs to the company.”
“Credit does not.”
Robert leaned back.
“This feels personal.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“It is.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
Julian continued before she could speak.
“Which is why it should have been corrected months ago.”
He opened a folder.
“The renewable infrastructure strategy presented last year was developed primarily by Elena.”
A director nodded slowly.
“I remember.”
“The Zurich acquisition risk model was hers.”
Another nod.
“The healthcare logistics restructuring plan was hers.”
Robert looked irritated.
“Are we rewriting history?”
Elena finally spoke.
“No.”
Everyone looked toward her.
“We’re restoring it.”
Silence.
Julian’s eyes remained on her.
The vote passed.
Unanimously except for Robert.
Then Nathan introduced the independent co-trustee.
A retired federal judge.
Julian immediately approved.
Robert objected.
“Why voluntarily dilute family control?”
Elena answered.
“Because Alexander is a child, not a corporate weapon.”
Robert scoffed.
“You’re naïve.”
“No.”
Her voice remained calm.
“I simply know what happens when powerful adults use private relationships to settle public scores.”
Julian looked down.
He deserved that.
The final agenda item began.
Chloe’s audit.
The general counsel presented financial irregularities.
Unauthorized data access.
Vendor conflicts.
Misrepresented medical documentation.
Millions in undisclosed related-party payments.
The room grew colder with every page.
Then came the surprise.
A payment of four hundred thousand dollars to a private investigations firm.
Dated three weeks before Elena filed for divorce.
Julian looked up.
“What investigation?”
The general counsel changed slides.
“Target named Elena Sterling.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Julian turned toward her.
She looked at him.
“You had me followed?”
“No.”
“Your company paid for it.”
“I didn’t authorize this.”
Robert shifted in his chair.
Everyone noticed.
Julian’s gaze moved to his uncle.
“Robert.”
The older man’s face remained composed.
“What?”
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
