Chapter 12 - THE DNA RESULT

Julian requested an independent DNA test.
Elena agreed through counsel.
Not because Julian’s doubt mattered to her.
Because Alexander would one day deserve documentation no one could challenge.
The test took place under strict supervision.
Forty-eight hours later, Nathan called.
“99.9998 percent.”
Elena closed her eyes.
She had already known.
Still, hearing it from an independent laboratory made everything feel more permanent.
Julian received the same call.
He was in the Sterling boardroom.
He ended the conversation and stared at the city.
His father’s portrait hung on the wall.
His grandfather’s portrait hung beside it.
Alexander Sterling now existed inside that line whether anyone wanted him there or not.
The board meeting began an hour later.
Seven directors attended.
Three family trustees joined remotely.
The issue was not paternity anymore.
The issue was control.
Nathan Price represented Elena.
Julian sat across from him.
Chloe was not invited.
That decision had created a private war at home.
Nathan opened a folder.
“Mrs. Bennett intends to act solely as trustee for Alexander Sterling’s interests.”
Julian looked up.
Bennett.
Elena had returned to her maiden name.
Hearing it still bothered him.
One director asked the obvious question.
“Will she seek a board seat?”
Nathan answered.
“The trust agreement permits the trustee to appoint one observer immediately and nominate a director when the holding reaches the voting threshold.”
Another director frowned.
“That could shift control.”
Julian spoke.
“Then control shifts.”
Everyone looked at him.
His uncle, Robert Sterling, leaned forward.
“You’re unusually relaxed about handing your ex-wife influence.”
“I’m unusually interested in honoring a legally binding trust.”
Robert laughed.
“Since when?”
Julian’s gaze hardened.
“Since I discovered how many people around me have been altering facts.”
The room became quiet.
After the meeting, Nathan approached him.
“Elena won’t appreciate you making this sound like a favor.”
“It isn’t.”
“Good.”
Julian looked at him.
“Did Chloe contact her?”
Nathan’s face gave away nothing.
“Ask your wife.”
“I’m asking you.”
“Then ask better.”
Julian almost smiled.
He understood why Elena hired him.
Nathan continued.
“Your wife approached Elena outside the pediatrician’s office.”
Julian’s expression changed instantly.
“What did she say?”
“She threatened her.”
Julian’s eyes went cold.
Nathan held up a hand.
“Before you become theatrical, Elena is safe.”
“What threat?”
Nathan played the recording.
Julian listened.
Walk away from the trust.
That trust will destroy you.
Julian will take the baby if you become a problem.
By the end, Julian’s hands were clenched.
Nathan stopped the recording.
“Your wife knows confidential trust information.”
Julian looked at him.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“We’re investigating unauthorized access.”
Nathan studied him.
“You married an interesting woman.”
Julian’s expression hardened.
“I married the wrong woman.”
Nathan did not respond.
Julian looked toward the boardroom doors.
For the first time since the wedding, he allowed himself to say the thought fully.
Not Elena.
He had already lost Elena.
This was about Chloe.
The woman he had trusted while distrusting everyone else.
The woman who had filtered information, managed access, summarized documents, and shaped narratives until Julian no longer knew where his own opinions ended and hers began.
He had married her because she made life feel simple.
Elena had always made him question himself.
May you like
Chloe had made him feel correct.
Julian was beginning to understand how dangerous that difference was.
