Chapter 17 - THE STERLING WAR

Robert Sterling arrived furious.

He had spent thirty years believing anger was authority.

Julian had inherited that habit.

Now he recognized it instantly.

“You froze my voting privileges.”

“Temporarily.”

“You don’t have the power.”

“The independent directors approved it.”

Robert threw a folder onto the table.

“This company exists because of this family.”

“No.”

Julian remained seated.

“This company exists because thousands of people work here.”

Robert laughed.

“Elena has infected you with idealism again.”

Julian’s face turned cold.

“Do not say her name as if she caused this.”

“She did.”

“How?”

“She never understood her place.”

Julian stared.

There it was.

Not strategy.

Not financial concern.

Place.

Robert continued.

“She married into this family and immediately began questioning acquisitions, compensation, offshore structures, family trusts.”

“Because some were wrong.”

“She embarrassed people.”

“She prevented losses.”

“She challenged me.”

Julian leaned forward.

“That was the problem.”

Robert said nothing.

“You didn’t care whether Elena was good for the company.”

Julian’s voice remained calm.

“You cared that she wasn’t obedient.”

Robert smiled.

“And you think she’ll be obedient now?”

“I hope not.”

That answer silenced everyone.

Elena sat at the opposite end of the table with Nathan.

Robert turned toward her.

“This is what you wanted.”

Elena almost laughed.

“What?”

“Power.”

“No.”

“Twelve percent.”

“My son’s twelve percent.”

“Controlled by you.”

“With an independent co-trustee.”

“A performance.”

Elena leaned forward.

“Do you know what I wanted, Robert?”

He stared.

“A husband who came home.”

The room became silent.

“A career I earned.”

She continued.

“A family that didn’t measure women by what they could produce.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“And privacy when my marriage failed.”

She looked directly at Robert.

“You people turned every ordinary thing I wanted into evidence that I was somehow dangerous.”

Robert smiled.

“You were dangerous.”

“Because I read spreadsheets?”

“Because Julian listened to you.”

Elena glanced at Julian.

“Not enough.”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

The forensic auditor entered.

He carried two binders.

The first contained vendor payments.

The second contained email correspondence.

One email changed everything.

It had been sent from Robert Sterling to Chloe Mercer ten months earlier.

If Elena cannot give Julian an heir, there is no reason to preserve her influence.

Keep him focused.

Another followed.

The fertility issue is useful.

Do not overplay it.

Elena felt cold.

Julian looked at his uncle.

Robert did not deny it.

“You manipulated my marriage.”

Robert scoffed.

“Your marriage was already failing.”

“You paid Chloe.”

“I paid consultants.”

“You authorized surveillance.”

“I protected the company.”

“You helped alter medical information.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“I never touched a medical file.”

“But you knew.”

Silence.

Julian stood.

“You used my wife’s health to control family voting power.”

Robert stood too.

“You are sentimental because there is a baby now.”

“No.”

Julian’s voice dropped.

“I am furious because I finally understand how easy I was to manipulate.”

Robert smiled.

“At least you understand something.”

Julian did not react.

He pressed a button.

The board secretary entered with outside counsel.

Robert looked around.

“What is this?”

“Removal proceedings.”

His smile vanished.

“You wouldn’t.”

Julian looked toward Elena.

May you like

Then back at his uncle.

“I already did.”
