Chapter 14 - WHAT ELENA WANTED

Elena did not celebrate when Nathan told her Julian was separating from Chloe.
She was feeding Alexander.
The baby cared very little about Manhattan scandal.
He cared about milk, sleep, clean diapers, and whether his mother stopped moving for more than thirty seconds.
“Julian filed today.”
Elena adjusted the bottle.
“For divorce?”
“Annulment petition first.”
“Fast.”
“Apparently marriage speed records run in the Sterling family.”
Elena gave him a look.
Nathan smiled.
“Too soon?”
“Yes.”
“Fair.”
She looked down at Alexander.
“Is Chloe contesting?”
“Violently.”
“Of course.”
“She issued a statement.”
Elena sighed.
“What does it say?”
“That Julian is emotionally compromised by the sudden appearance of a child whose mother concealed the pregnancy for strategic reasons.”
Elena’s hand stopped.
“Strategic.”
“Her favorite word.”
“She leaked that?”
“Her attorney released it.”
Elena stared at the wall.
There it was.
The attack she had expected.
Nathan continued.
“We don’t need to answer.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
“I want to answer.”
He raised an eyebrow.
Elena looked at him.
“Not publicly.”
“What do you want?”
She thought for a moment.
Then she finally said it.
“My name back.”
“You already changed it.”
“My professional name.”
Nathan understood.
During the divorce, Sterling Global had removed Elena from advisory materials.
Several projects she had helped create were reassigned.
Her work had been quietly erased alongside the marriage.
“You want your record corrected.”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
“An independent board investigation into Chloe’s access to my medical information.”
Nathan nodded.
“What else?”
“Protection for Alexander’s trust.”
“Already underway.”
“I want an independent co-trustee.”
Nathan looked surprised.
“You are legally entitled to control it yourself.”
“I don’t want anyone claiming I’m using my son’s shares for revenge.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
Nathan leaned back.
“That is unusually cautious.”
“I spent six months watching people accept whatever story Julian’s office gave them.”
“What about Julian?”
Elena was quiet.
“What about him?”
“Custody.”
Her expression changed.
“I don’t want to keep Alexander from his father.”
Nathan nodded.
“But?”
“But I don’t know him as a father.”
“You knew him as a husband.”
“That’s exactly why I’m cautious.”
Nathan waited.
Elena looked at her son.
“I want supervised visits at first.”
“Julian will hate that.”
“I don’t care.”
“He may fight.”
“Then he fights.”
She lifted Alexander to her shoulder.
“He is used to controlling the room.”
Nathan smiled.
“So are you.”
“No.”
Elena gently patted Alexander’s back.
“I’m learning how to stop surrendering it.”
Later that afternoon, Julian arrived for his scheduled visit.
A professional family specialist sat downstairs.
Julian noticed immediately.
“You brought supervision.”
“Yes.”
“I’m his father.”
“Yes.”
“I have no history of violence or substance abuse.”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Elena looked at him calmly.
“Because eighteen days ago you didn’t know he existed.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“You think I’d hurt him?”
“I think parenthood requires more than biology.”
He looked away.
That one landed.
Elena softened slightly.
“This isn’t punishment.”
“It feels like it.”
“Not everything that makes you uncomfortable is punishment.”
Julian almost laughed.
“You used to say that about board meetings.”
“You used to ignore me there too.”
“I remember.”
Elena placed Alexander in his arms.
Julian looked down.
The anger disappeared.
That transformation told her more than any legal document could.
He held his son carefully.
Alexander yawned.
Julian smiled.
Not the Sterling smile.
Not the one from magazines.
Something smaller.
Real.
Elena watched from the other side of the room.
For a few dangerous seconds, she remembered loving him.
Then she remembered the mediation room.
May you like
Love and memory could coexist.
That did not mean reconciliation had to follow.
