Chapter 2 - The Arrest Warrant

The detectives reached the private floor at 9:17 that night.
Nathan knew because he watched the elevator numbers change one by one.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
Samuel stood beside him.
Grace held Lily tightly.
The little girl was awake now.
She understood enough to know something was wrong.
“Mommy?”
Grace kissed her forehead.
“I’m right here.”
The elevator opened.
Detective Raymond Pike stepped out first.
Nathan recognized him immediately.
Pike had attended Cole Foundation fundraisers.
Nathan had shaken his hand at charity dinners.
His father had once called the man useful.
That memory now made Nathan sick.
Pike approached with two uniformed officers.
“Mr. Cole.”
Nathan blocked the hallway.
“You have sixty seconds to explain why you’re here.”
Pike produced a warrant.
“Grace Miller is under investigation for kidnapping, falsifying identification documents, and attempted international flight with a minor.”
Grace gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“I don’t even own a passport.”
Pike looked at her.
“We recovered one from your apartment.”
Nathan’s eyes sharpened.
“She hasn’t been to her apartment since yesterday.”
“That doesn’t change what we recovered.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“I’m her counsel effective immediately.”
Pike handed him the warrant.
Samuel read it quickly.
Then his expression darkened.
“This was signed less than forty minutes ago.”
Pike shrugged.
“Judges work late.”
Samuel looked at Nathan.
“Not this judge.”
Nathan understood.
Judge Malcolm Reese had been a longtime guest of Charles Harrington.
The trap was closing.
Pike tried to move around Nathan.
Nathan did not move.
“If you touch Grace before my attorney verifies that warrant, I’ll have every camera in this hallway recording your badge number.”
Pike smiled faintly.
“You think money protects everyone, Mr. Cole?”
“No.”
Nathan’s eyes went cold.
“I think evidence does.”
He lifted his phone.
“And you’re standing under six hospital security cameras.”
Pike’s smile disappeared.
Grace whispered.
“Nathan, don’t make this worse.”
He looked back at her.
“They already made it worse.”
Lily suddenly climbed down from the bed.
She walked toward Nathan.
Everyone stopped.
The little girl reached up and took two of his fingers.
Nathan looked down.
Her hand was impossibly small.
“Daddy.”
The word still struck him like a fist.
Lily pointed at Pike.
“That man was at our house.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
Lily looked at her mother.
“The old house.”
Pike’s face changed for less than a second.
Nathan saw it.
Samuel saw it too.
Nathan crouched beside Lily.
“When did you see him?”
Lily thought hard.
“When Mommy cried.”
Grace became pale.
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Grace?”
She stared at Pike.
“Four years ago.”
Pike said nothing.
Grace’s voice shook.
“He came to my apartment after your father threatened me.”
“He told me if I contacted you, Child Services would take Lily.”
Nathan slowly stood.
Pike reached for his cuffs.
“That’s enough.”
Nathan stepped between them.
Samuel raised his phone.
“Detective, I strongly recommend you reconsider.”
Pike glanced toward the officers.
Neither moved.
They had heard Lily.
They had seen his reaction.
Pike’s authority suddenly looked much less solid.
Samuel turned the warrant over.
Then he stopped.
“There’s no court filing number.”
Pike stared at him.
Samuel held the document toward Nathan.
“This is not a valid warrant.”
Pike lunged for it.
Nathan caught his wrist.
The hallway erupted.
One officer shouted.
Another stepped back.
Hospital security came running.
Pike jerked free.
“You’re obstructing an investigation.”
Nathan held the paper high.
“No.”
“I’m exposing one.”
Pike backed toward the elevator.
“This won’t end here.”
Nathan’s voice followed him.
“You’re right.”
“It ends at your badge.”
The elevator doors closed.
Grace sank onto the bed.
Samuel immediately photographed the fake warrant.
Nathan looked at his daughter.
Lily still held his hand.
He knelt again.
“Sweetheart.”
“Did that man scare your mommy?”
Lily nodded.
Nathan closed his eyes for one second.
When he opened them, there was no hesitation left.
He turned to Samuel.
“Call an emergency board meeting.”
Samuel frowned.
“At midnight?”
“At midnight.”
“And notify every major shareholder.”
Grace stared at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Nathan looked at the confession from his father.
“Something my family has spent generations making sure no Cole ever had to do.”
“What?”
May you like
Nathan picked up his phone.
“Tell the truth in public.”
