Chapter 10 - The List

Eleanor remembered the list in fragments.
That made it more frightening.
She described offshore accounts tied to politicians.
Judges.
Defense contractors.
Media executives.
Foreign investors.
People whose careers depended on money moving invisibly through Harrington companies.
Charles had not merely stolen from Cole Holdings.
He had built a network of leverage.
Grace sat beside her mother.
Nathan listened.
Samuel recorded everything with Eleanor’s permission.
Eleanor suddenly looked toward Lily.
“She cannot have the Cole name.”
Grace frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Richard placed something under the heir.”
Nathan’s pulse quickened.
“What?”
Eleanor struggled.
“The dead man’s clause.”
Samuel leaned forward.
“I’ve never heard that term.”
Eleanor tapped her temple.
“Richard called it that.”
“If his blood heir was revealed before the Harrington merger, the files transferred.”
Nathan stood.
“Transferred where?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Samuel pulled out the trust documents.
He searched.
Then stopped.
“There’s an encrypted data escrow attached to the generational trust.”
Nathan stared.
“What triggers it?”
Samuel read.
“Legal recognition of a biological descendant.”
Grace looked at Lily.
Nathan felt sick.
“When I accepted Lily legally…”
Samuel nodded slowly.
“You may have activated Richard’s release mechanism.”
Everyone became quiet.
Nathan’s phone buzzed.
An unknown message.
ONE HEIR.
ONE KEY.
ONE FUNERAL.
Nathan showed Samuel.
Another message arrived.
RENOUNCE PATERNITY BY MIDNIGHT.
OR THE GIRL BECOMES THE PRICE.
Grace stood.
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No what?”
“You cannot publicly recognize Lily anymore.”
Nathan stared.
Grace’s voice shook.
“If your name puts her in danger, take it back.”
Lily looked between them.
Nathan crouched beside Grace.
“My name didn’t put her in danger.”
“My family did.”
“What difference does that make to a four-year-old?”
He had no answer.
Grace continued.
“I kept her alive for four years without you.”
Nathan flinched.
“I know.”
“Then let me keep doing it.”
Nathan looked at Lily.
She was playing with Rosie’s ear.
He imagined signing a document denying her.
He imagined protecting her by becoming another man who abandoned her on paper.
“No.”
Grace stared.
Nathan stood.
“I will not erase her to satisfy another threat.”
“Nathan.”
“They’ve controlled this family by making everyone choose fear.”
“My father feared losing the company.”
“My mother feared losing status.”
“You feared losing Lily.”
Grace’s eyes hardened.
“Do not compare my fear to theirs.”
“I’m not.”
Nathan softened his voice.
“Yours was justified.”
“But fear still took five years from all three of us.”
Grace looked away.
Nathan continued.
“I’m not giving them another day.”
Samuel interrupted.
“If Richard’s escrow activated, we need to find where the data went.”
His phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?”
Nathan waited.
Samuel ended the call.
“Cole Holdings servers just released eleven encrypted files.”
“To whom?”
“Every major newsroom in the country.”
Nathan stared.
Samuel looked at Eleanor.
“The dead man’s clause activated.”
Grace whispered.
“What’s in the files?”
Samuel shook his head.
“We’ll know soon.”
Nathan’s phone began vibrating repeatedly.
Notifications filled the screen.
Breaking news.
Financial networks.
Federal investigations.
Politicians denying involvement.
Harrington Global trading suspended.
Then one headline appeared that silenced the room.
LEAKED FILES IMPLICATE LATE BILLIONAIRE RICHARD COLE IN DECADES-LONG BRIBERY NETWORK.
Nathan read it twice.
May you like
His father had exposed Charles.
And himself.
