Chapter 12 - Charles Harrington’s Last Card

Charles Harrington watched Nathan’s resignation from a private airfield.

His jet was fueled.

His passport was ready.

Three offshore accounts remained untouched.

He could disappear.

A younger Charles might have.

But pride was heavier than fear.

Nathan Cole had publicly destroyed decades of planning.

Charles could not leave without taking something from him.

His phone rang.

William Cole.

Charles answered.

“You should be in prison.”

William’s voice trembled.

“So should you.”

Charles smiled.

“Then we still have common interests.”

William lowered his voice.

“Nathan transferred control.”

“I saw.”

“He triggered an independent audit.”

“I saw that too.”

“They’ll find the acquisition files.”

Charles became silent.

“What acquisition files?”

William cursed.

“You don’t know?”

Charles’s voice hardened.

“Know what?”

“Richard purchased thirty-one percent of Harrington Global through intermediaries before he died.”

Charles stopped breathing.

“That’s impossible.”

“He was preparing to take your company apart.”

Charles ended the call.

For the first time, Richard’s final strategy became clear.

Richard had known the truth would eventually surface.

So he had designed a self-destruct mechanism.

Expose both empires.

Protect Lily’s trust.

Destroy Charles financially.

Charles looked toward his jet.

Then he made a different call.

Grace answered.

“Who is this?”

“Ask your mother what happened the night her car went into the river.”

Grace went silent.

Charles smiled.

“She didn’t tell you everything.”

“What do you want?”

“A meeting.”

“No.”

“Then you’ll spend the rest of your life believing Richard Cole caused the crash.”

Grace’s voice sharpened.

“Didn’t he?”

Charles laughed softly.

“Ask Eleanor.”

Grace looked across the room.

Her mother slept nearby.

“What are you saying?”

“Your mother wasn’t running from Richard.”

“She was running from someone else.”

Grace’s stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Charles paused.

“Your father.”

Grace froze.

“My father died when I was six.”

“That is what Eleanor told you.”

The call ended.

Grace stood motionless.

Nathan entered moments later.

He saw her face.

“What happened?”

Grace told him.

Nathan immediately wanted federal agents.

Grace stopped him.

“First I ask my mother.”

Eleanor woke slowly.

Grace sat beside her.

“Mom.”

“Who was driving the car?”

Eleanor’s eyes changed.

Grace understood.

“Oh God.”

Eleanor started crying.

“Your father found out.”

“Found out what?”

“The accounts.”

“He worked for Charles too.”

Grace stood.

“My father?”

“He wanted money.”

“I wanted to expose them.”

“We fought in the car.”

Tears moved down Eleanor’s face.

“He grabbed the wheel.”

Grace covered her mouth.

“He caused the crash?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Eleanor looked toward Nathan.

“Richard.”

Nathan’s stomach turned.

“What did my father do?”

“He made your father disappear.”

Grace stared.

“Disappear where?”

Eleanor whispered.

“I don’t know.”

Samuel entered carrying his laptop.

“Nathan.”

“You need to see this.”

A facial-recognition scan connected Grace’s father, Daniel Miller, to a current identity.

A man named David Mercer.

Security consultant.

Age fifty-eight.

Current employer.

Harrington Global.

Grace stared at the photograph.

May you like

Her father was alive.

And he had been working for Charles Harrington for fifteen years.
