Chapter 17 - The Restitution Account

Richard Cole’s final instructions were hidden inside Lily’s trust.
Samuel found them at dawn.
The irony was almost unbearable.
Richard had spent years hiding Lily.
Then he had designed his last attempt at redemption so that only her existence could unlock it.
The file opened with a video.
Richard Cole appeared on screen.
Thin.
Older.
Clearly ill.
Nathan watched beside Grace.
“If you are seeing this, then Lily has been legally recognized.”
Richard looked into the camera.
“I know her name.”
Nathan stopped breathing.
Richard continued.
“I saw photographs.”
“I knew where she lived.”
Grace’s face hardened.
“I did not approach because I believed my presence would bring Charles closer.”
“That may have been cowardice.”
“It may also have been the first useful decision I made.”
Nathan watched his father struggle for breath.
“I took money back.”
“Two hundred and eighty million dollars.”
“It belongs to people harmed by what Charles and I built.”
“Do not keep it.”
“Do not return it to Cole Holdings.”
“Distribute it.”
Grace looked at Nathan.
Richard continued.
“The access key is divided.”
“William holds the first half.”
“Margaret holds the second.”
“But neither controls the account.”
“Lily does.”
Nathan frowned.
Samuel leaned toward the screen.
Richard smiled faintly.
“The account activates only through the trustee of Lily’s inheritance.”
Nathan realized.
“I’m the trustee.”
Samuel nodded.
Richard continued.
“If Charles is still alive, he will eventually come for the money.”
“Let him.”
Nathan stared.
“I have attached a final audit trail.”
“Any attempted unauthorized transfer will automatically release his account records to federal authorities.”
Samuel sat back.
“Richard built a trap.”
Grace whispered.
“So Charles kidnapping Margaret…”
Nathan nodded.
“He walked straight into it.”
They contacted federal agents.
Nathan agreed to meet Charles.
The location arrived at 10:12 a.m.
An unfinished luxury development outside the city.
One of Harrington Global’s failed projects.
Nathan drove there carrying a secured laptop.
Federal teams remained hidden.
Charles stood on the top floor beside Margaret.
Her hands were bound.
Daniel Miller stood behind him.
Nathan stopped.
Grace’s father looked ashamed.
Charles smiled.
“You brought the trustee.”
Nathan held up the computer.
“Release my mother.”
“Money first.”
Daniel avoided Nathan’s eyes.
Nathan looked at him.
“You went back.”
Daniel whispered.
“He took Eleanor.”
Nathan’s blood chilled.
Charles smiled.
“She’s safe.”
“For now.”
Nathan understood.
Daniel had been forced to cooperate.
Nathan opened the laptop.
“William gave you his code?”
Charles held up a piece of paper.
“Yes.”
Margaret stared at Nathan.
“Don’t.”
Charles pressed the pistol against her neck.
“Your half.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then recited eight numbers.
Nathan entered both halves.
The restitution account opened.
$280,414,903.
Charles stared at the number.
Years of greed condensed into one expression.
“Transfer it.”
Nathan typed.
Samuel’s remote system followed every keystroke.
The screen flashed.
TRANSFER PROCESSING.
Charles smiled.
Then his phone began vibrating.
Once.
Twice.
Ten times.
His smile disappeared.
News alerts appeared on Nathan’s computer.
HARRINGTON OFFSHORE RECORDS RELEASED TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
GLOBAL ASSETS FROZEN.
MULTIPLE ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED.
Charles stared at Nathan.
“What did you do?”
Nathan looked at him.
“My father knew you.”
Charles raised the gun.
Nathan continued.
“He knew you could resist prison.”
“You could resist shame.”
“You could abandon Victoria.”
“But he knew there was one thing you could never resist.”
Charles’s hand shook.
Nathan nodded toward the screen.
“Money.”
Federal agents moved.
Charles grabbed Margaret.
Daniel attacked him from behind.
The gun fired.
Margaret screamed.
Nathan ran.
Charles fell.
Agents flooded the floor.
Daniel collapsed beside a concrete pillar.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Grace’s father looked at Nathan.
“Eleanor?”
Nathan crouched beside him.
“She’ll know what you did.”
Daniel struggled to breathe.
“Tell Grace…”
Nathan leaned closer.
Daniel whispered.
“Tell her I finally chose right.”
His eyes closed.
Paramedics rushed forward.
May you like
Charles Harrington was dragged away in handcuffs.
And for the first time in fifteen years, he no longer controlled where Daniel Miller went.
