Chapter 13 - The Father at the Door

Daniel Miller arrived before anyone could find him.

At 2:06 a.m., the alarm at the Vermont facility sounded.

Nathan reached Lily’s room first.

Grace followed.

Federal agents surrounded the hallway.

A man stood outside the glass entrance.

Gray hair.

Heavy coat.

Hands raised.

Grace saw his face.

Her entire body stopped.

Memories returned in fragments.

A man lifting her onto his shoulders.

A deep laugh.

A birthday cake.

Then a funeral without a body because adults said the river had taken him.

Grace whispered.

“Dad.”

Daniel heard her through the glass.

His face broke.

Federal agents searched him.

No weapon.

No phone.

No tracking device.

Grace refused to meet him alone.

Nathan stood beside her when Daniel entered the interview room.

Daniel stared at his daughter.

“You look like your mother.”

Grace’s expression was cold.

“You lost the right to say that fifteen years ago.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“Are you working for Charles?”

“Yes.”

Nathan stepped forward.

Daniel raised one hand.

“I’m not here for him.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel looked toward Grace.

“To stop him.”

Grace laughed bitterly.

“You had fifteen years.”

“He owned me.”

“He owns everyone until they decide otherwise.”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

“Your father understood that eventually.”

Nathan said nothing.

Daniel placed a tiny memory card on the table.

“Charles keeps a private archive independent of Harrington Global.”

Samuel leaned closer.

“Where?”

“Switzerland.”

“Encrypted servers.”

“The access key changes every twelve hours.”

“And you have it?”

Daniel nodded.

“For another three hours.”

Nathan stared at the card.

“What’s inside?”

“Evidence linking Charles personally to every payment.”

“Pike.”

“Judge Reese.”

“William Cole.”

“Victoria.”

“Your father.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor through the observation window.

“And me.”

Grace’s face tightened.

“You expect sympathy because you brought evidence?”

“No.”

Daniel met her eyes.

“I expect prison.”

That answer surprised everyone.

Daniel continued.

“But Charles is moving money tonight.”

“If we do nothing, he disappears before morning.”

Nathan called federal investigators.

The transfer began immediately.

Daniel watched Grace.

“Is Lily safe?”

Grace’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t get to ask about her.”

“I know.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I saw photographs.”

Grace stood abruptly.

“You watched us?”

“Charles ordered surveillance.”

Nathan grabbed Daniel by the collar.

“You watched my daughter for him?”

Daniel did not resist.

“Yes.”

Grace stared.

Nathan looked ready to hit him.

Daniel whispered.

“I also changed every report.”

Nathan stopped.

“What?”

“When Charles asked where Grace lived, I gave him old addresses.”

“When Victoria hired men to follow Lily, I redirected them.”

Grace stared at her father.

“You protected us?”

“Not enough.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“But every time I thought about coming to you, I remembered the bridge.”

“I remembered your mother screaming.”

“I remembered what kind of man I had been.”

Grace looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I thought staying dead was the only decent thing I could give you.”

Grace’s voice shook.

“It wasn’t.”

“I know.”

An agent entered.

“The server is opening.”

Samuel looked at the screen.

Thousands of records downloaded.

Then a red warning appeared.

REMOTE PURGE INITIATED.

Daniel stood.

“Charles knows.”

The countdown began.

Ninety seconds.

The transfer reached twenty percent.

Forty.

Sixty.

Then stopped.

Connection lost.

Samuel cursed.

Daniel stared at the incomplete files.

Nathan asked.

“Did we get enough?”

Samuel opened the folders.

His eyes widened.

“Yes.”

“Enough for what?”

Samuel turned the screen.

“Enough to indict half the conspiracy.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“And Charles?”

Samuel shook his head.

“His personal authorization logs were in the portion we lost.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Charles still had one path left.

He could claim everyone else acted without him.

May you like

And Nathan knew exactly what Charles would do next.

He would sacrifice his own daughter.
