Chapter 4 - The Trust Clause

Nathan read the clause twice.

Then a third time.

His father had created the trust nearly ten years earlier.

At the time, Nathan had considered the language outdated and overly complicated.

He had never imagined it would matter.

Until now.

“If I had a child, control of my shares moved into the household trust.”

Ethan nodded.

“And as your legal spouse, Vanessa would become co-trustee.”

Nathan looked at her.

Vanessa said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“With the right documents, she could approve major transfers if you were unavailable.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“What documents?”

Vanessa suddenly walked toward the door.

Nathan blocked her again.

“Move.”

“No.”

“You can’t keep me here.”

“And you can’t fake my child and expect to walk away without answering questions.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

For the first time, she stopped pretending to be fragile.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

She looked at both brothers.

“Your father built that trust to control you from the grave.”

“That doesn’t explain you.”

“It explains why I needed leverage.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Leverage for what?”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“My future.”

Ethan gave a short laugh.

“There it is.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You think you’re better than me?”

“This is not about me.”

“It will be.”

Nathan stepped between them.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa ignored the question.

Instead, she looked at Nathan.

“You were already talking about divorce before I told you I was pregnant.”

Nathan remembered.

They had not used the word directly.

But the possibility had existed.

Separate bedrooms.

Separate schedules.

Separate lives.

Vanessa continued.

“If we divorced then, I would walk away with whatever your lawyers decided I deserved.”

“You signed a prenup.”

“Exactly.”

“So you invented a baby to break the trust structure.”

“I invented security.”

Nathan stared at her in disbelief.

“You invented a human life.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You have never understood what it feels like to have nothing.”

“You live in a twelve-million-dollar house.”

“Because I married you.”

The sentence landed harder than she expected.

Nathan became completely still.

Ethan looked away.

Vanessa realized what she had said.

“Nathan, that isn’t what I meant.”

“It sounded very clear.”

She moved toward him.

He stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

Vanessa’s hands fell to her sides.

Ethan opened the envelope again.

“There’s more.”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“Ethan.”

Nathan looked at him.

“What else?”

“Three weeks ago, someone requested a certified copy of your father’s trust amendment.”

Nathan frowned.

“Who?”

Ethan placed the request form on the desk.

Nathan read the signature.

His stomach dropped.

Vanessa Cole.

Below her signature was another name.

Authorized witness: Dr. Adrian Mercer.

Nathan looked up.

“Who is Adrian Mercer?”

Vanessa did not answer.

May you like

Ethan did.

“The man who has been pretending to be her obstetrician.”
