Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Story

Vanessa sat in silence on the station bench.

For the first time, Nathan saw her without the performance.

No fake pregnancy.

No carefully calculated tears.

No defensive anger.

She simply looked afraid.

Nathan remained standing several feet away.

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You manipulated me.”

“I know.”

“You helped him access my family trust.”

“Yes.”

Nathan swallowed.

“But he was going to destroy you too.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I think so.”

Ethan crossed his arms.

“Do not confuse being betrayed by your partner with being innocent.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I’m not asking anyone to call me innocent.”

That answer surprised Nathan.

Margaret studied her.

“How did you meet Adrian?”

Vanessa looked down.

“At a charity dinner.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That he knew things about the Cole family.”

Nathan laughed without humor.

“And that was enough?”

“No.”

Vanessa finally looked at him.

“He knew about us.”

Nathan frowned.

“Our marriage?”

“He knew you had consulted a divorce attorney.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

Ethan turned toward him.

“You did?”

Nathan nodded.

“Once.”

Vanessa continued.

“Adrian showed me copies of emails between Nathan and a family law firm.”

Nathan stared.

“How did he get them?”

“I never knew.”

Margaret answered quietly.

“He had help inside Cole Meridian.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Who?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I don’t know yet.”

Vanessa continued.

“Adrian told me Nathan would divorce me within months.”

Nathan looked away.

“He wasn’t wrong.”

“No.”

Her answer hurt more than he expected.

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said the trust contained information that could protect me financially.”

“So you agreed to fake a pregnancy.”

“Not immediately.”

“How long did it take?”

“Three months.”

Nathan gave her a bitter look.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“It’s just the truth.”

She explained everything.

Adrian supplied the test.

The ultrasound.

The rented clinic.

The fake nurses.

The silicone prosthetics.

At first, Vanessa had planned to claim a miscarriage after gaining access to the archive.

Then Adrian demanded more time.

Every week required another lie.

Another performance.

Another fabricated appointment.

Nathan listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he asked one question.

“Did you ever love me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You don’t do this to someone you love.”

“I know.”

For the first time, she did not defend herself.

Ethan’s phone buzzed.

A security message from Cole Meridian had arrived.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

“Nathan.”

“What?”

“Someone just accessed the executive server using your credentials.”

Nathan grabbed the phone.

The login originated from his office.

But Nathan was miles away.

Ethan looked at Margaret.

“Mercer’s inside the company.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to the access level.

“That login requires biometric confirmation.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

Only four people had legacy biometric access to his father’s executive archive.

Nathan.

Ethan.

Margaret.

And Charles Cole’s former chief financial officer.
