Chapter 19 - Why Vanessa Chose Nathan

The criminal investigation moved quickly after Adrian’s arrest.

His devices contained forged documents.

Financial records.

Fake medical files.

Manipulated videos.

Communications with contractors.

Evidence of the staged clinic.

And years of planning.

Richard’s DNA test confirmed the truth.

The probability that he was Adrian’s biological father exceeded 99.99 percent.

Adrian’s claim against the Cole estate collapsed.

Richard turned himself in for financial crimes connected to the old offshore accounts.

Margaret agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Cole Meridian stabilized.

The public scandal slowly changed direction.

But one question remained between Nathan and Vanessa.

Why him?

Nathan waited until they were alone in the house.

The nursery door was still closed upstairs.

Boxes of baby clothes sat untouched.

The crib remained half assembled.

Vanessa stood in the living room with a suitcase.

She had agreed to move out.

Before she left, Nathan asked.

“What did Adrian mean?”

Vanessa did not pretend she misunderstood.

“Why I chose you.”

“Yes.”

She placed the suitcase down.

“When we met, I already knew who you were.”

Nathan nodded.

“That isn’t surprising.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“But Adrian didn’t introduce us.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then what?”

“My father did.”

Nathan stared.

Vanessa took an old envelope from her purse.

“My father worked for Cole Meridian twenty-three years ago.”

Nathan had never known that.

“He was a junior accountant.”

“What happened?”

“He found irregular payments.”

“The ledger.”

“Yes.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

Vanessa continued.

“He confronted Charles.”

“What did my father do?”

“He fired him.”

Nathan looked away.

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“My father never recovered.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“So you married me for revenge.”

“At first, I wanted to meet you because of what happened.”

Nathan waited.

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

She took a breath.

“When I met you, I expected to hate you.”

“And?”

“I didn’t.”

Nathan stared at her.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“That became the problem.”

She had spent years telling herself the Cole family was responsible for everything her family lost.

Then she met Nathan.

He was not Charles.

He did not know her father.

He did not know the old scandal.

They fell in love.

For a while, Vanessa abandoned the idea of revenge.

Then their marriage deteriorated.

Then Adrian appeared.

He knew her father’s story.

He knew Charles had fired him.

He knew Vanessa felt trapped by the prenup.

He used every old wound.

Every fear.

Every resentment.

“And I let him.”

Vanessa whispered.

Nathan remained silent.

She continued.

“The pregnancy was my choice.”

“Adrian gave me the plan.”

“But I said yes.”

Nathan nodded.

“I need you to understand that I’m not blaming everything on him.”

“That would be another lie.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Did you ever plan to actually have a child with me?”

Vanessa cried quietly.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before everything became this.”

Nathan looked toward the stairs.

“That might be the saddest part.”

She wiped her face.

“I know.”

Nathan took off his wedding ring.

He placed it on the table.

Vanessa stared at it.

“I’m filing for divorce tomorrow.”

She closed her eyes.

“I expected that.”

“I will also cooperate with investigators.”

“I understand.”

“If they charge you for the trust fraud, I won’t interfere.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I understand.”

Nathan looked at her for a long time.

Then he asked the question that had been haunting him since the dinner.

“Was there ever one moment during the fake pregnancy when you wanted to stop?”

Vanessa whispered,

“Every day.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

She picked up her suitcase.

“Because every day I told myself tomorrow would be easier.”

Nathan looked at the fake ultrasound still sitting on the hallway table.

“And tomorrow never came.”

Vanessa opened the door.

Before leaving, she looked back once.

“No.”

May you like

“It didn’t.”

Then she walked away.
