Chapter 10 - Locker 214

Riverfront Station was almost empty when they arrived.
Nathan, Ethan, Vanessa, and Margaret moved through the underground concourse.
Locker 214 stood near the last platform.
Nathan entered the code Vanessa gave him.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a black leather bag.
Nothing else.
Ethan pulled it out.
“Don’t open it here.”
They carried it into an empty station office.
Inside the bag were documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And a small digital recorder.
Nathan picked up the first photograph.
It showed Vanessa meeting Adrian outside a hotel.
The date was ten months earlier.
The next photograph showed them inside a restaurant.
Then another.
Then another.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
Vanessa stared at the pictures.
“I told you we weren’t having an affair.”
“These pictures don’t prove that.”
“Because it didn’t happen.”
Ethan picked up the recorder.
He pressed play.
Adrian’s voice filled the room.
“If Nathan believes the child is his, he’ll never ask the right questions.”
Vanessa’s recorded voice answered.
“I don’t want to hurt him more than necessary.”
Adrian laughed.
“You married a Cole.”
Vanessa replied,
“That doesn’t mean he deserves this.”
Nathan stopped the recording.
He stared at her.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“That conversation was taken out of context.”
Ethan almost exploded.
“What context makes that sound better?”
Nathan pressed play again.
Adrian’s voice continued.
“Once the trust recognizes the pregnancy, we only need his signature.”
Vanessa answered.
“And after we get the archive?”
“You walk away.”
“With what?”
“Enough money that you’ll never need another Cole again.”
Nathan stopped the device.
The silence felt unbearable.
Vanessa whispered,
“I didn’t take money.”
Ethan pulled bank records from the bag.
“You sure?”
Vanessa grabbed them.
Her face changed.
“These aren’t mine.”
Nathan looked over her shoulder.
A Cayman account had received three transfers totaling 4.6 million dollars.
The beneficiary name was Vanessa Cole.
Her hands began trembling.
“I have never seen this account.”
Ethan looked skeptical.
Nathan did not.
Something about the trap was too obvious.
Why leave photographs, recordings, and financial records together?
Why give them everything they needed to blame Vanessa?
Margaret understood at the same moment.
“This bag is not evidence.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
“It’s a case.”
Margaret pointed to the documents.
“Adrian built a complete case against Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Nathan looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on that?”
Ethan connected it to a computer.
One folder appeared.
Its name was simple.
CONFESSION.
Inside was a video file.
Vanessa appeared on the screen.
She sat in a dark room.
Her voice shook.
“I planned the pregnancy deception.”
Nathan looked toward her.
Vanessa stared in horror.
On the screen, she continued.
“I forged medical records, manipulated Nathan Cole, and transferred family assets without his knowledge.”
The real Vanessa whispered,
“I never recorded this.”
Margaret leaned closer.
The image looked perfect.
The voice sounded perfect.
But Ethan noticed something.
“Look at the clock behind her.”
The seconds hand moved backward.
Once.
Then forward again.
Nathan stared.
“Fake.”
Ethan nodded.
“AI-generated or heavily manipulated.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Nathan understood.
Adrian had never planned to share the money.
He had never planned to protect Vanessa.
May you like
He had planned to leave one person holding every piece of the crime.
His wife.
