Chapter 18 - The Final Trap

Police wanted Vanessa to refuse.
Nathan disagreed.
“He’ll disappear.”
The investigators eventually approved a controlled meeting.
Richard would wear a wire.
Vanessa would carry a duplicate document box.
Nathan and Ethan were ordered to remain outside.
Neither intended to remain far.
At 10:00 p.m., Vanessa and Richard entered the abandoned clinic.
Adrian waited in the old delivery room.
He looked nothing like the friendly doctor Nathan had once seen at his anniversary party.
His face was exhausted.
His eyes were restless.
He looked at Richard.
“So the dead finally rise.”
Richard stopped several feet away.
“Hello, Adrian.”
Adrian’s expression twisted.
“Don’t say my name like you know me.”
Richard swallowed.
“I should have known you.”
“You should have told me.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s anger flickered.
For the first time, he looked less like a mastermind and more like a son who had waited decades for an answer.
“You let me hate Charles.”
“I was afraid.”
“You let me believe his sons had stolen my life.”
“I know.”
“You watched me build everything around that belief.”
Richard shook his head.
“I didn’t know until three years ago.”
Adrian laughed.
“That makes it better?”
“No.”
Vanessa placed the box on a table.
“You used me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You used Nathan.”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“I was stupid enough to believe you had a line you wouldn’t cross.”
Adrian smiled.
“People only talk about lines when they’ve already crossed one.”
Vanessa did not answer.
Richard stepped forward.
“End this.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Give me the ledger.”
Richard nodded toward the box.
Adrian opened it.
Empty folders.
His face changed.
“You lied.”
Richard replied,
“I learned from you.”
Adrian grabbed the box and threw it across the room.
Police moved outside.
Nathan heard the signal in his earpiece.
But then Adrian pulled a second phone from his pocket.
“If I don’t enter a code in five minutes, every ledger file I have goes public.”
Richard froze.
Adrian smiled.
“All the accounts.”
“All the payments.”
“All the names.”
Nathan entered the building despite police instructions.
Ethan followed.
Adrian heard them.
He turned.
“Nathan.”
Nathan stopped in the doorway.
“You wanted a Cole.”
Adrian laughed.
“I wanted what your family stole.”
“My family didn’t steal your father.”
Adrian’s eyes moved toward Richard.
Nathan continued.
“He hid from you.”
“That does not make me your enemy.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You had everything.”
“And you think destroying Vanessa makes you whole?”
Vanessa looked at Nathan.
Adrian answered,
“She chose to participate.”
“She did.”
Nathan’s voice remained steady.
“And she will answer for what she did.”
“But so will you.”
Police entered from both sides.
Adrian looked toward the exits.
There was nowhere to go.
Richard removed a DNA kit from his coat.
Adrian stared at it.
Richard’s voice broke.
“I am your father.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Richard continued.
“I should have said that forty years ago.”
Adrian’s phone slowly lowered.
For the first time, the rage disappeared.
“What?”
Richard stepped closer.
“Charles protected my secret.”
Adrian looked at Nathan.
Then Vanessa.
Then Margaret, who stood near the entrance with police.
Everyone was watching him.
The story that had controlled his entire life had collapsed in one sentence.
His thumb moved away from the phone.
Police took it.
Adrian did not resist.
But as officers led him away, he looked at Vanessa.
“You still haven’t told Nathan why you chose him.”
May you like
Vanessa went completely still.
Nathan heard every word.
