Chapter 4 - The Woman Adrian Had Refused to Believe

Police arrived twenty-three minutes later.

Clara gave her statement in the dining room.

Adrian remained in the hallway because she asked him to.

That request hurt.

He accepted it.

Detective Reed arrived with another officer and reviewed the security footage.

He watched the stroller video twice.

Then he watched Vanessa entering Adrian’s office.

His expression became more serious with each recording.

“We’re moving beyond a domestic complaint.”

Adrian folded his arms.

“What does that mean?”

“It means there may be attempted fraud, forgery, and child endangerment.”

Clara spoke quietly.

“She knew I had the files.”

Reed looked at her.

“You think the stroller incident was meant to discredit you?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe she intended the baby to be injured?”

Clara hesitated.

The question changed the temperature of the room.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

That uncertainty was unbearable.

Detective Reed asked Clara whether she wanted to report Adrian for striking her.

The room went still.

Adrian did not look away.

Clara looked at him.

For eighteen months, she had watched Adrian grieve Rachel.

She had watched him sit beside Olivia’s bed when nightmares came.

She had seen him fall asleep on the nursery carpet because Emma would not settle unless he was nearby.

Adrian was not a cruel man.

But kind men could still do cruel things.

And love did not erase accountability.

“Yes.”

Adrian inhaled slowly.

Clara continued.

“I want it documented.”

Detective Reed nodded.

Adrian said nothing.

Reed looked at him.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“I understand.”

Clara’s eyes flickered with surprise.

Adrian looked directly at her.

“You should document it.”

Those words mattered more than another apology.

The officer photographed Clara’s cheek.

Then her injured elbow.

Adrian stood in the hallway and listened to the camera shutter.

Each click felt like a verdict.

Olivia appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Is Clara going to jail?”

“No.”

Adrian answered immediately.

“Vanessa lied.”

Olivia descended slowly.

“Are you going to jail?”

The question nearly broke him.

“I don’t know.”

Olivia nodded.

She was too young to understand every legal consequence.

But she understood fairness.

“You hit Clara.”

“I did.”

“And that was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Olivia looked at Clara.

Then she looked back at her father.

“Mom would be mad at you.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I know.”

Rachel had been dead for two years.

Yet somehow the sentence made her presence fill the room.

Clara wiped her eyes.

Rachel had been the reason Clara came to the Mercer house in the first place.

They had met at a children’s hospital fundraiser.

Rachel had asked Clara to help temporarily after Emma’s birth.

Temporary became permanent when Rachel’s cancer returned.

Before Rachel died, she made Clara promise something.

“Don’t let grief make Adrian blind.”

Clara had never understood those words.

Not until Vanessa.

Detective Reed finished taking statements.

Before leaving, he handed Adrian a card.

“Do not contact Vanessa directly.”

“What if she contacts me?”

“Save everything.”

Adrian nodded.

Reed turned to Clara.

“And I recommend you stay somewhere secure tonight.”

“I have a friend in Cambridge.”

Adrian interrupted.

“She can stay here.”

Clara looked at him.

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

Adrian stopped speaking.

Clara picked up her suitcase.

Olivia ran toward her.

“Please don’t leave.”

Clara crouched.

“I’m not leaving you.”

“You’re leaving the house.”

“For tonight.”

Olivia wrapped her arms around Clara’s neck.

Emma began crying upstairs.

Clara instinctively looked toward the sound.

Then she stopped herself.

Adrian noticed.

Even now, her first instinct was to protect his children.

His first instinct earlier had been to blame her.

Clara kissed Olivia’s forehead.

Then she walked toward the door.

Before she reached it, Adrian’s phone vibrated.

A text from Vanessa appeared.

YOU THINK THAT VIDEO SAVED YOU.

Adrian stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

CHECK RACHEL’S WILL.

Clara saw his expression.

“What?”

May you like

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

“Vanessa says I need to check Rachel’s will.”
