Chapter 11 - The House Without Clara

The Mercer house felt wrong without Clara.
Emma refused her afternoon bottle from the replacement caregiver.
Olivia barely spoke at dinner.
Adrian burned pasta because Clara was no longer there to remind him the stove ran hot.
Nothing catastrophic happened.
That almost made it worse.
Life simply became harder in a hundred small ways.
Adrian began noticing everything Clara had quietly done.
Medicine schedules.
School forms.
Emma’s favorite blanket.
Olivia’s science project deadline.
The nightlight Rachel bought before she died.
Clara had carried the emotional memory of the entire household.
And Adrian had treated her like a stranger the moment Vanessa accused her.
Three days after the stroller incident, Adrian attended a court hearing related to Vanessa’s emergency protective order.
Vanessa claimed she feared him.
Her attorney described Adrian as volatile.
For once, Adrian did not argue emotionally.
His attorney submitted the security footage.
The judge watched Vanessa push the stroller.
The courtroom changed.
Her attorney requested a recess.
The judge denied the protective order.
But the criminal investigation continued separately.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Someone had leaked the story.
“Mr. Mercer, did you assault your nanny?”
“Did your fiancée try to harm your child?”
“Is Mercer Capital involved in fraud?”
Adrian kept walking.
Then one reporter shouted.
“Did you fire Clara Bennett after she saved your baby?”
Adrian stopped.
David Chen touched his arm.
“Keep moving.”
Adrian looked toward the cameras.
“No.”
David whispered.
“Adrian.”
But Adrian stepped toward the microphones.
“I did not fire Clara Bennett.”
Cameras clicked.
“I wrongly accused her after believing a false statement.”
More cameras rose.
“And I struck her.”
David closed his eyes.
Adrian continued.
“That was unacceptable.”
The reporters became silent.
“Ms. Bennett saved my daughter.”
He looked directly into the nearest camera.
“She deserves privacy, respect, and the truth.”
Then he walked away.
The clip spread online within hours.
Clara watched it once.
Then she turned off her phone.
Maya sat beside her.
“He admitted it.”
“He had to.”
“A lot of powerful men wouldn’t.”
Clara looked down.
“That doesn’t make what happened disappear.”
“No.”
Maya leaned back.
“But it tells you what he does after the mistake.”
Clara did not answer.
That evening, Olivia called.
Clara almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
“Hey.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Did Dad scare you?”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Olivia became quiet.
“Are you scared of him now?”
“No.”
“Then why won’t you come home?”
Clara chose her words carefully.
“Because sometimes you can love people and still need space from them.”
“Do you love us?”
“With my whole heart.”
“Dad too?”
Clara’s breath caught.
“That’s complicated.”
Olivia sighed.
“Adults say that when the answer is yes.”
Clara almost laughed.
Then Olivia whispered.
“Emma keeps looking at the door.”
Clara pressed her fingers to her lips.
“I miss her too.”
After the call ended, another message arrived.
This one was from an unknown number.
It contained a photo of Clara entering Maya’s apartment building.
