Chapter 17 - Clara Makes the Choice

Adrian returned to David’s house without Emma.
Olivia saw his face and understood before he spoke.
“No.”
She backed away.
“No, no, no.”
Clara caught her.
“Emma is alive.”
Adrian spoke quickly.
“Vanessa wants a trade.”
Olivia looked at Clara.
Clara already knew.
“She wants me.”
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“You’re not going.”
Clara stood.
“We already discussed this.”
“This is different.”
“You still don’t decide for me.”
“She has my baby.”
“And that is exactly why I’m going.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I will not use you to get Emma back.”
“You aren’t using me.”
Clara stepped closer.
“I’m choosing.”
Adrian looked at her injured cheek.
The bruise was fading.
His memory was not.
“I already failed you once.”
“This isn’t about your guilt.”
“It is to me.”
“That’s the problem.”
Clara’s voice stayed steady.
“Emma needs you thinking clearly, not punishing yourself.”
Reed entered.
“We can control the exchange.”
Adrian turned.
“You support this?”
“I support ending this safely.”
He looked at Clara.
“But only if Ms. Bennett understands the risk.”
“I do.”
The drop location arrived an hour later.
An old commuter rail platform outside the city.
Vanessa ordered Clara to bring a duffel bag containing cash and the trust amendment.
Police replaced the money with marked bills.
Clara wore a transmitter hidden beneath her sweater.
Adrian was forbidden from approaching.
At 2:12 a.m., Clara stepped onto the empty platform.
Fog hung over the tracks.
A black sedan waited near the far entrance.
Vanessa emerged.
She held Emma.
Clara’s heart nearly stopped.
Emma was awake.
She appeared frightened but unharmed.
“Put the bag down.”
Vanessa called.
Clara placed it on the pavement.
“Give me Emma.”
“Walk away from the bag.”
Clara took three steps backward.
Vanessa approached.
“Why did you have to interfere?”
Clara kept her voice calm.
“You pushed a baby toward a staircase.”
“I pushed a stroller three feet.”
“You let it reach the stairs.”
“Because you came running.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You always came running.”
Clara understood.
That was what Vanessa hated most.
Rachel trusted Clara.
Olivia trusted Clara.
Emma reached for Clara.
Even Adrian eventually trusted Clara.
Vanessa had spent years manufacturing love.
Clara had simply earned it.
“You could have walked away.”
Clara said.
“With millions?”
Vanessa laughed.
“With freedom.”
“I was never going back to being nobody.”
Emma began crying.
Clara extended her hands.
“She needs me.”
Vanessa looked at the baby.
For one second, distraction softened her grip.
Clara stepped forward.
Vanessa immediately pulled Emma back.
“Stop.”
Clara froze.
A train horn sounded in the distance.
The platform lights flickered.
Police waited beyond the station.
Vanessa did not know how close they were.
Then Vanessa looked directly at Clara’s sweater.
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re wearing a wire.”
Clara’s blood went cold.
Vanessa grabbed the microphone.
She tore it free.
Then she smiled.
“You really thought I wouldn’t check?”
Police moved.
Vanessa ran.
She carried Emma toward the tracks.
Clara ran after her.
“Vanessa.”
A train horn grew louder.
Vanessa reached the edge of the platform.
May you like
And Clara realized Vanessa was no longer trying to escape.
She was trying to make sure nobody could follow.
