Chapter 12 - Someone Was Watching Clara

Detective Reed placed a patrol car outside Maya’s building.

Clara hated it.

She hated feeling watched.

She hated checking reflections in store windows.

She hated jumping every time a car slowed near the curb.

Most of all, she hated knowing Vanessa had moved from manipulation to intimidation.

Adrian offered to hire private security.

Clara refused.

Then Reed recommended the same thing.

She reluctantly agreed.

Adrian did not choose the guard.

He paid the invoice anonymously through his attorney.

Clara discovered that only later.

Meanwhile, police traced the threatening message to a prepaid phone purchased near South Station.

Security footage showed a man buying it.

The image was grainy.

But Martin identified him.

Derek Sloan.

Vanessa’s half brother.

Derek had a record for identity theft and wire fraud.

Reed now had another connection.

Vanessa was not acting alone.

Martin began talking.

The more he talked, the worse the story became.

Vanessa targeted Adrian before Rachel died.

She learned about the Mercer trusts through hospital billing records.

She knew Rachel’s illness was terminal.

She researched Adrian.

His company.

His daughters.

His habits.

His grief.

After Rachel died, Vanessa waited.

Then she engineered an introduction at a charity event.

Martin entered the plan later.

He had gambling debts.

Vanessa offered money.

At first, he only altered internal audits.

Then he approved fraudulent transfers.

Then he helped create documents questioning Adrian’s competence.

“Why didn’t he stop?”

Clara asked Reed.

“Money.”

“That simple?”

“Usually.”

Reed looked at Adrian.

“And fear.”

Vanessa recorded Martin accepting his first payment.

After that, she owned him.

Adrian listened without speaking.

Each new detail made him feel less like a victim and more like an idiot.

Clara recognized the expression.

“Stop.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“Blaming yourself for her planning.”

“I brought her into my children’s home.”

“She deceived you.”

“I ignored you.”

“That part is yours.”

Adrian nodded.

Clara continued.

“But Vanessa’s crimes are Vanessa’s.”

It was the first compassionate thing she had said to him since the slap.

He noticed.

He did not exploit it.

That evening, Adrian took Olivia to visit Rachel’s grave.

Olivia placed white roses beside the stone.

“Did Mom know Vanessa was bad?”

“She knew something felt wrong.”

“Why didn’t she tell you?”

“She probably thought she had more time.”

Olivia looked at the name carved into the granite.

“Everybody always thinks that.”

Adrian sat beside her.

“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you sooner.”

“You listen now.”

“I’m trying.”

Olivia nodded.

Then she said something Adrian did not expect.

“Clara cries when she thinks nobody sees.”

His head turned.

“How do you know?”

“I saw her once after Mom died.”

Adrian waited.

“She sat in the laundry room and cried into a towel so we wouldn’t hear.”

Olivia looked at him.

“She stayed because Mom asked her to.”

Adrian looked toward Rachel’s grave.

He had spent two years believing Clara stayed because it was her job.

Suddenly he understood.

It had never been only a job.

That night, Clara’s security guard called Reed.

A black SUV had been circling Maya’s building.

Police stopped it three blocks away.

Derek Sloan was driving.

Inside the vehicle, officers found gloves, three burner phones, a camera with photographs of Clara, and a printed map.
