Chapter 3 - Vanessa’s Real Plan

Adrian locked the front door.
Then he locked it again.
It was irrational.
He knew Vanessa had keys.
He knew locks meant nothing if someone had access.
But doing something felt better than standing still.
He carried the USB drive into his office and inserted it into his computer.
Clara remained near the doorway.
She had already packed one suitcase.
Adrian noticed it.
He did not ask her to unpack.
The first video loaded.
Vanessa entered the office at 11:43 p.m.
Adrian had been in Chicago that night.
She crossed directly to the filing cabinet.
There was no hesitation.
No searching.
She knew exactly which drawer she wanted.
She unlocked it with the silver key.
Then she removed a folder marked MERCER FAMILY TRUST.
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
His jaw tightened.
The second recording showed Vanessa photographing account statements.
The third showed her plugging a device into Adrian’s desktop computer.
The fourth made Adrian stop breathing.
Vanessa sat behind his desk.
She placed a document in front of her.
Then she practiced Adrian’s signature.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Dozens of times.
Clara looked away.
Adrian did not.
He forced himself to watch.
The woman he had planned to marry was forging his name.
He remembered the first time Vanessa mentioned marriage.
It had been almost eleven months after Rachel died.
She had told him he deserved happiness again.
She had told Olivia that she did not want to replace her mother.
She had spent hours sitting beside Emma’s crib when the baby had a fever.
Or at least Adrian thought she had.
Now every memory felt contaminated.
“Why didn’t you come to me immediately?”
Clara’s eyes moved toward his cheek.
The question sounded almost absurd after what had happened.
Adrian caught himself.
“I’m sorry.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Monday.”
Adrian remembered.
Vanessa had interrupted.
She claimed Emma had a rash.
Tuesday, Clara tried again.
Vanessa suddenly announced that Olivia needed to be picked up from school.
Wednesday, Adrian left for New York before sunrise.
“Today I was going to show you.”
Clara looked toward the USB drive.
“Vanessa knew.”
Adrian stood.
He opened the lowest drawer of his desk.
The Mercer trust documents were still there.
Or appeared to be.
He pulled out the first folder.
The papers looked normal.
Then he reached the transfer authorizations.
Three pages were missing.
His phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
Adrian answered.
“Adrian Mercer?”
“Yes.”
“This is Detective Samuel Reed with Boston Police.”
Adrian looked at Clara.
“What happened?”
“We have a woman here named Vanessa Cole.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“What about her?”
“She’s reporting an assault.”
Clara stared at him.
Detective Reed continued.
“She claims your employee, Clara Bennett, intentionally endangered your infant daughter and attacked her when confronted.”
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“That is a lie.”
“We’ll need statements.”
“I have security video.”
There was a pause.
“What kind of video?”
“Video showing Vanessa push the stroller herself.”
Another pause.
This one was longer.
“Do not delete anything.”
“I won’t.”
“And Mr. Mercer?”
“Yes?”
“Vanessa says there are additional recordings proving Clara has been stealing from you.”
Clara’s face drained of color.
Adrian stared at her.
For one horrible second, old instincts rose.
Suspicion.
Doubt.
Questions.
Then he remembered the television screen.
He remembered Clara throwing herself across the landing.
He remembered his hand striking her face.
This time, Adrian chose differently.
“I don’t believe her.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
Not because the words erased what happened.
They did not.
But because he had finally learned to wait for evidence before delivering punishment.
Detective Reed told Adrian officers would arrive shortly.
The call ended.
Clara sank into the chair beside the desk.
“She planned this.”
Adrian nodded.
“She planned more than this.”
He opened the laptop connected to his company’s financial system.
His password did not work.
He tried again.
ACCESS DENIED.
He called his chief financial officer.
No answer.
He called his bank.
The automated fraud line confirmed three pending wire transfers.
Eight hundred thousand dollars.
One point two million dollars.
And four million dollars.
All authorized in Adrian Mercer’s name.
All initiated during the previous six hours.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Vanessa had not pushed Emma’s stroller because she was angry.
May you like
She had pushed it because she needed Clara removed before the money disappeared.
And if Olivia had not recorded the truth, Vanessa’s plan might have worked perfectly.
