Chapter 9 - ROBERT COLE’S CONFESSION

Nathan sat on the floor beneath the staircase.

For years, his father had been the standard against which Nathan measured himself.

Disciplined.

Honorable.

Demanding but fair.

The letter shattered that image.

Grace sat across from him.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally Nathan continued reading.

Robert described how Cole Properties nearly collapsed during a recession.

Charles Whitmore offered loans.

Then partnerships.

Then opportunities that looked legal on paper.

Robert became complicit gradually.

Fake invoices.

Inflated land valuations.

Shell corporations.

Money moved through construction projects.

By the time Robert understood the full structure, he was trapped.

Nathan read aloud.

“I told myself I was protecting the company.”

“I told myself thousands of employees depended on me.”

“The truth is simpler.”

“I was afraid to lose what I had built.”

Grace lowered her eyes.

Nathan continued.

“Michael Bennett was the first man brave enough to tell me fear did not excuse complicity.”

Grace began crying.

Nathan paused.

Grace shook her head.

Robert explained that Michael discovered the fraud and confronted him.

Instead of silencing Michael, Robert confessed.

The two men began collecting evidence.

They planned to go to federal authorities.

But Charles discovered the investigation.

The night Michael died, Robert had followed him because they were supposed to deliver copies to a journalist.

A black sedan forced Michael’s car into the barrier.

Robert escaped.

He spent the next two months hiding evidence.

Then he began experiencing unexplained dizziness.

Chest pain.

Weakness.

Robert suspected he was being poisoned.

Nathan stopped reading.

Grace stared at him.

“He knew.”

Nathan nodded.

The letter continued.

If my death is called natural, do not believe it.

Leonard Voss controls too many documents.

Charles controls too many doctors.

The evidence Michael and I gathered is divided.

The ledger records money.

The tapes record voices.

The trust records motive.

But the final evidence is with the person Michael saved first.

Nathan looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Grace wiped her face.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan examined the metal case.

There were six audio tapes.

The first was labeled WHITMORE - VOSS.

The second WHITMORE - VALE.

The third ROBERT - MICHAEL.

Nathan found an old cassette player inside the case.

He pressed play.

Static filled the small room.

Then Charles Whitmore’s unmistakable voice.

“Michael Bennett is becoming a problem.”

Leonard Voss responded.

“What do you want done?”

Charles answered casually.

“Nothing permanent unless necessary.”

Grace covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Charles discussed monitoring Michael.

Blocking access to accounts.

Threatening his family.

Then Martin Vale’s voice appeared.

“The daughter is seeing Nathan Cole.”

Charles paused.

“How serious?”

“Very.”

Charles swore.

Leonard Voss asked.

“Does Robert know?”

“Not yet.”

Charles replied.

“But Victoria does.”

Grace and Nathan looked at each other.

The recording shifted.

A younger Victoria spoke.

“I can handle Nathan.”

Nathan shut his eyes.

Victoria continued.

“Grace is temporary.”

“He’ll get bored.”

Charles laughed.

“Men like Nathan do not get bored with women who make them feel understood.”

“You need something stronger.”

Victoria asked.

“Like what?”

Charles answered.

“Fear.”

The tape ended.

Nathan sat motionless.

Grace whispered.

“She was involved before my father died.”

Nathan nodded.

He looked at the remaining tapes.

“Victoria knew everything.”

Grace shook her head.

“Maybe not everything.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You’re defending her?”

“No.”

“I’m saying she sounds like someone trying to impress her father.”

Nathan considered it.

Grace continued.

“That does not excuse anything.”

“But if Charles has controlled her entire life, there may be information she has never told anyone.”

Nathan thought of Victoria in the hotel.

Beaten.

Taken.

Trying to leave.

He hated what she had done.

But Grace was right.

Victoria might also be a witness.

Nathan called the hospital.

Victoria was conscious.

Federal agents had moved her to an undisclosed medical facility.

Nathan requested an interview.

Victoria agreed under one condition.

Grace had to come.

Two hours later, Nathan and Grace entered a guarded hospital room.

Victoria sat upright in bed.

Bruises covered one side of her face.

She looked at Grace first.

Then Nathan.

“The family reunion I always feared.”

Nathan remained standing.

Grace sat.

Victoria looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

Grace’s expression did not move.

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“I know that means nothing.”

“You are right.”

Victoria nodded.

Nathan placed a recorder on the table.

“Tell us everything.”

Victoria stared at it.

“My father will kill me.”

Nathan answered.

“He already tried.”

Victoria laughed weakly.

“Fair point.”

She looked at Grace.

“I knew about you before Nathan ever met me.”

Grace said nothing.

“I watched you from a distance.”

“My father told me Nathan would eventually control the Cole Trust.”

“He wanted our families permanently connected.”

Nathan frowned.

“So he ordered you to marry me?”

Victoria gave a sad smile.

“He called it destiny.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

Victoria continued.

“When Grace appeared, he panicked.”

“Not because Nathan loved you.”

“Because your father had discovered the accounts.”

Grace asked.

“Did you know they killed him?”

Victoria’s eyes closed.

“I knew they planned to scare him.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Victoria opened her eyes.

“No.”

“Not until later.”

Grace’s jaw tightened.

“When?”

“After Robert died.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“You knew my father was poisoned.”

Victoria started crying.

“Yes.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Who did it?”

Victoria whispered.

“Martin.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Nathan asked.

“On Charles’s order?”

“Yes.”

Nathan’s breathing became controlled and slow.

Victoria continued.

“My father kept evidence against everyone.”

“He called it insurance.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Nathan almost laughed.

Victoria raised her hand.

“But Leonard Voss does.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“You know where Voss is.”

Victoria nodded.

“He never disappeared.”

“Charles hid him.”

“Where?”

Victoria looked at Grace.

“In the last place anyone connected to your father would willingly go.”

Grace went still.

“My childhood home.”

Victoria nodded.

May you like

“The house your family abandoned after Michael died.”
