Chapter 17 - THE MAUSOLEUM

The Whitmore family mausoleum stood inside a private cemetery outside Chicago.

Federal agents obtained a warrant.

Victoria accompanied them.

Nathan and Grace waited behind the perimeter.

Victoria approached the stone structure slowly.

“My mother hated this place.”

Nathan looked at her.

“She knew about Charles?”

“Some of it.”

“Not enough.”

Victoria entered with agents.

Behind Eleanor Whitmore’s marble memorial plaque, investigators found a steel compartment.

Inside were twelve encrypted drives.

Three passports belonging to Charles.

Cash.

Bearer bonds.

And handwritten journals.

Victoria stared at them.

“He used her grave as a safe.”

Nathan felt no surprise left.

Cybersecurity specialists decrypted the first drive.

It contained decades of payments.

Judges.

Doctors.

Consultants.

Security firms.

Politicians.

The second drive contained recordings.

The third contained contingency plans.

Nathan opened one file.

COLE SUCCESSION.

It detailed every stage.

Separate Grace and Nathan.

Monitor Grace.

Confirm pregnancy.

Obtain Lily’s blood.

Alter birth records.

Position Victoria as maternal figure.

Marry Victoria to Nathan.

Activate trust.

Remove Nathan.

Transfer control.

Grace stared at the screen.

There it was.

Her entire nightmare summarized in bullet points.

Nathan looked at another section.

FINAL CONTINGENCY - IF EXPOSED.

He opened it.

Grace read over his shoulder.

Phase One.

Trigger Whitmore stock collapse.

Phase Two.

Move liquid assets offshore.

Phase Three.

Eliminate cooperating witnesses.

Names followed.

Leonard Voss.

Dr. Mercer.

Martin Vale.

Victoria Whitmore.

Grace Bennett.

Nathan Cole.

Grace whispered.

“Martin doesn’t know he’s on the list.”

Nathan nodded.

Charles intended to kill his own accomplices.

Then Nathan saw another name.

Lily Cole.

His breath stopped.

Beside Lily’s name was a different instruction.

RECOVER.

NOT ELIMINATE.

Grace read it.

“No.”

Nathan immediately contacted federal agents.

Every school.

Hospital.

Airport.

Private terminal.

And marina received Lily’s photograph and protective alert.

Then investigators found a scheduled transaction.

A Whitmore-controlled cargo ship was due to leave a private Lake Michigan port at four in the morning.

Destination.

Canada.

Nathan looked at the clock.

Two forty-five.

Grace knew.

“He’s leaving tonight.”

Federal agents moved toward the port.

Nathan and Grace remained under heavy protection.

At three fifteen, Martin Vale contacted prosecutors.

He wanted a deal.

Charles had tried to have him killed.

Martin provided the location of a backup safe house.

Agents raided it.

Dr. Mercer was captured.

Charles was not there.

But Mercer talked quickly.

Charles planned to board the cargo vessel through a private dock.

By three fifty, federal teams surrounded the terminal.

A drone spotted Charles walking toward the ship.

He carried one small bag.

Nathan watched the live feed from a secure command center.

Grace stood beside him.

Charles reached the gangway.

Agents emerged.

Charles stopped.

He turned slowly.

He raised his hands.

Grace exhaled.

Nathan did not.

Something felt wrong.

Too easy.

Charles looked directly toward the drone.

Then smiled.

Nathan whispered.

“That’s not him.”

Grace stared.

“What?”

Nathan pointed.

“Charles broke his left wrist skiing fifteen years ago.”

“He never fully rotated his hand.”

“The man on that screen is moving both wrists normally.”

Agents tackled the decoy.

Nathan grabbed the map.

“If that’s not Charles, where is he?”

Grace’s face went white.

She looked toward Lily’s secured room.

Nathan ran.

The room was empty.

The protection officer lay unconscious beside the door.

The window was open.

Nathan’s world stopped.

Grace screamed Lily’s name.

On the floor lay Lily’s stuffed replacement rabbit.

Pinned beneath it was a note.

BLOOD COMES HOME.

Nathan picked it up.

His hands shook violently.

Grace grabbed his coat.

“No.”

Nathan looked at her.

Grace’s eyes burned through tears.

“He does not get her.”

Nathan stared at the empty room.

Then his phone rang.

Charles.

Nathan answered.

A child’s frightened voice whispered.

“Daddy?”

Nathan nearly collapsed.

“Lily.”

Charles took the phone.

“She’s safe.”

Nathan’s voice became deadly.

“If you touch her—”

Charles interrupted.

“You finally sound like a Whitmore.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“I am not a Whitmore.”

Charles laughed.

“You are my son.”

“No.”

“Nathan.”

“Robert Cole was my father.”

Silence.

For the first time, Charles sounded wounded.

“You have no idea what Robert took from me.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“I know what you took from everyone else.”

Charles’s voice hardened.

“Bring the original trust certificate to the old Lake Geneva cabin.”

“Midnight tomorrow.”

Grace recognized it.

The cabin from the photograph.

The place where Nathan and Grace had once been happy.

Charles continued.

“Come with Grace.”

“No police.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“If Lily has one scratch—”

“She doesn’t.”

Then Lily’s voice returned.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“I’m scared.”

Nathan shut his eyes.

“I know, baby.”

“Listen to me.”

“Mommy and I are coming.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan continued.

“You stay brave.”

“You remember what Mommy taught you.”

Lily sniffled.

“Truth is better when you check.”

Nathan almost broke.

“That’s right.”

The line disconnected.

Grace looked at him.

“We’re going.”

Nathan nodded.

May you like

“But not the way Charles expects.”
