Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

Three days later, the emergency family court hearing began.

The state moved quickly because Lily’s birth records had been altered.

Grace sat beside Nathan and Daniel.

Victoria entered through a separate door under federal protection.

She had agreed to testify.

Grace watched her carefully.

Victoria looked smaller without the perfect dresses, diamonds, and practiced smile.

She wore a simple navy suit.

No engagement ring.

No makeup beyond what was needed to cover healing bruises.

The judge reviewed the DNA results.

Probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent.

Nathan stared at the page.

He had known.

Still, seeing it officially made his chest tighten.

Lily was his daughter.

No ambiguity.

No condition.

No argument.

His.

Grace noticed his expression.

She placed one hand near his on the table.

Not touching.

But close.

The state registrar testified next.

The original birth certificate had listed Grace Bennett as Lily’s mother.

Four months later, someone used high-level administrative credentials to replace Grace’s name with Victoria Whitmore.

The alteration had been hidden in the audit logs.

The former state records administrator had already agreed to cooperate with federal authorities.

Then Victoria testified.

Daniel approached.

“Did you know Lily Rose Bennett was Nathan Cole’s biological child?”

“Yes.”

“When did you first learn this?”

“When she was approximately seven months old.”

Grace stared at her.

Daniel continued.

“Did Grace Bennett tell you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you inform Nathan?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Victoria looked toward Nathan.

“Because my father told me not to.”

“Did your father threaten you?”

Victoria hesitated.

“Not then.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then why obey him?”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Because I wanted Nathan.”

The courtroom became very still.

Nathan looked down.

Victoria continued.

“I had wanted him since I was twenty-two.”

“My father told me our marriage would secure both families.”

“When Grace disappeared, I told myself it was temporary cruelty for a larger future.”

Grace’s eyes hardened.

Victoria looked at her.

“That is not an excuse.”

“I know.”

Daniel asked.

“Did you ever personally participate in efforts to misrepresent yourself as Lily’s mother?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Grace’s hand curled into a fist.

Daniel placed photographs from Nathan’s hidden room on a screen.

“Did you take these photographs?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My father said we needed proof of an established maternal relationship in case Nathan discovered Lily later.”

Nathan’s face became cold.

Daniel asked.

“Did Lily understand what was happening?”

“No.”

“She thought I was taking her to play.”

Grace started crying silently.

Nathan’s hand moved across the table.

This time he touched hers.

Grace did not pull away.

Daniel asked the final question.

“Did you strike Grace Bennett with a hockey stick?”

Victoria looked at Grace.

“Yes.”

Nathan stared at her.

Victoria continued.

“I was trying to take the photograph from Lily.”

“Grace blocked me.”

“I swung.”

“I told myself I only wanted to scare her.”

She looked down.

“But I could have seriously injured her.”

“Or Lily.”

“Yes.”

Daniel returned to his table.

The judge ordered Lily’s original birth certificate restored immediately.

The court recognized Nathan’s paternity.

Because Grace had been Lily’s sole caregiver since birth, all primary custodial rights remained with her pending a long-term agreement.

Nathan accepted without argument.

Grace looked surprised.

Outside the courtroom, she approached him.

“You didn’t fight for immediate joint custody.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Why would I?”

“You’re her father.”

“I met her three days ago.”

Grace stared at him.

Nathan continued.

“You kept her alive.”

“You raised her.”

“You protected her while I didn’t even know she existed.”

“I am not going to use money and lawyers to walk into her life and pretend four years disappeared.”

Grace’s expression softened.

Nathan looked toward the secured room where Lily waited with a child advocate.

“I want time with her.”

“A lot of it.”

“But I want her to feel safe more than I want to win something.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“You’ve changed.”

Nathan smiled faintly.

“So have you.”

Grace laughed.

“I had to.”

Nathan nodded.

“So did I.”

A federal agent approached.

“We have a problem.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“What?”

“Charles Whitmore collapsed during transport.”

Grace stiffened.

“What happened?”

“Possible cardiac event.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

The symmetry was impossible to miss.

Robert Cole had supposedly died from the same thing.

“Where is he?”

“St. Matthew Medical Center.”

Nathan froze.

Dr. Evan Mercer’s hospital.

The agent continued.

“Whitmore specifically requested a physician.”

Nathan already knew the name.

“Mercer.”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“This is not a medical emergency.”

Grace nodded.

May you like

“It’s an escape.”
