Chapter 16 - THE HIDDEN SON

Daniel began digging into the Whitmore family history.

Charles had one publicly recognized child.

Victoria.

His wife, Eleanor, died twelve years earlier.

No sons.

No other daughters.

But financial records revealed recurring payments to a woman named Marianne Hale.

For twenty-seven years.

Nathan looked at the photograph Daniel found.

Marianne had been a junior analyst at Whitmore Holdings.

She left the company suddenly at age twenty-six.

Nine months later, she gave birth to a son.

Ethan Hale.

Grace stared at the name.

“I know him.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

“He went to my high school.”

Daniel frowned.

“Same age?”

“A year older.”

Grace thought harder.

“My father knew his mother.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Find everything.”

Ethan Hale had died six years earlier in a boating accident.

No spouse.

No known children.

Nathan felt the connection but could not see it.

Daniel found Ethan’s college records.

He had attended Northwestern.

Same year Nathan did.

Then a photograph appeared.

Nathan stared.

“I knew him.”

Grace looked at him.

“You did?”

“Not well.”

“He was in one of my economics classes.”

Nathan remembered a quiet student.

Dark hair.

Serious.

Always leaving lectures early.

Grace examined the photograph.

“Why would Charles hide his own son?”

Daniel answered.

“Estate planning.”

“Scandal.”

“Maybe Ethan’s mother refused acknowledgment.”

Nathan looked at the trust documents again.

Then something occurred to him.

“Charles said Lily was his granddaughter.”

Grace shook her head.

“She’s not.”

“Biologically, no.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Unless Charles believes I am not Robert’s biological son.”

The room went silent.

Grace stared at him.

Nathan laughed once from disbelief.

“That’s absurd.”

Daniel did not answer.

Nathan looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel slowly opened another file.

“We found something in Robert’s medical records.”

Nathan’s face changed.

“What?”

“Your blood type.”

Nathan frowned.

“So?”

“It is incompatible with the blood types listed for Robert and your mother.”

Nathan went still.

Grace whispered.

“Are you saying Robert wasn’t Nathan’s biological father?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“That possibility exists.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

Everything inside him resisted it.

Robert had raised him.

Taught him to ride a bicycle.

Attended every school event.

Built Cole Properties with him.

Biology felt irrelevant.

Except Charles had just called Lily his granddaughter.

Nathan whispered.

“Ethan.”

Daniel looked at him.

Nathan understood.

“Ethan Hale wasn’t Charles’s hidden son.”

“He was Robert’s.”

Grace stared.

Nathan continued.

“And I was Charles’s.”

No one spoke.

Daniel finally said.

“We need DNA.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Charles is in hiding.”

“We have Victoria.”

Nathan frowned.

“If Victoria and I are half siblings, a test can establish a relationship.”

Grace sat down slowly.

Nathan felt physically ill.

Every memory of Charles shifted.

His unusual interest in Nathan’s education.

His insistence Nathan join certain boards.

His determination Nathan marry Victoria.

Nathan closed his eyes.

“He wanted me to marry my half sister.”

Grace whispered.

“Maybe he didn’t know.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Charles knows everything.”

Daniel arranged the test through federal authorities.

Victoria agreed.

The preliminary result arrived twenty-four hours later.

Nathan and Victoria shared biological markers consistent with half siblings.

Nathan stared at the report.

Victoria cried.

Grace remained beside him.

Nathan asked.

“Who was my mother to Charles?”

Daniel had already found the answer.

Before marrying Robert Cole, Nathan’s mother had worked at Whitmore Holdings.

She and Charles had an affair.

Robert knew Nathan might not be biologically his.

He raised him anyway.

Nathan stared at Robert’s photograph.

The revelation did not make Robert less his father.

It made him more.

Grace understood.

“He chose you.”

Nathan nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

“He knew.”

Daniel continued.

“Charles apparently discovered the truth years later.”

“His obsession with controlling the Cole Trust makes more sense now.”

Nathan frowned.

“He believed the trust assets belonged to his bloodline through me.”

“And Lily.”

Grace’s face hardened.

“So when he said his granddaughter, he meant biologically.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stood.

“This changes nothing.”

Grace looked at him.

“About Lily?”

“About anything.”

“Robert Cole was my father.”

“Michael Bennett was yours.”

“Charles Whitmore is a criminal who contributed DNA.”

“That’s all.”

Grace nodded.

Then Nathan’s phone rang.

Victoria.

He answered.

Her voice shook.

“Nathan.”

“What happened?”

“I remembered where my father keeps his insurance files.”

Nathan’s eyes sharpened.

“Where?”

“You’re not going to believe me.”

“Try.”

Victoria took a breath.

May you like

“Inside my mother’s mausoleum.”
